Default Video analysis of referee performance
Although not about kendo, this could be an interesting read for some.

I've been a fan of 24 Fighting Chickens for some time - came across it while searching for Shotokan related stuff. If you get the chance, there are some very interesting articles to go through. Most of it's related to Shotokan, but there are a few gems that have really made me stop and think.

Very nice find. Quite relevant to judging in kendo as well. Traditionalists might balk at the idea of training judges through video analysis. But if competitors are to have confidence in the results, I think it's important to address the question of "Who's watching the watchmen."

In some ways, that's the role of the chief court judge. He or she is supposed to be keeping an eye on the judges and having a "friendly" chat with them if they're making problematic calls.

Interesting article. I would have liked about four more years of study, ten times as large of a sample size, and about that many more footnotes too. But it was very interesting.

On a related note, at the highest levels of Kendo competition do the judges get graded? Are there sports commentators in Japan that criticize certain judges like we do NBA or NFL refs? I would guess the answer to both is no, that they are very high rank and not subject to criticism, but maybe I am wrong on that.
