Default How often do you change the oil in your car?
Just curious how often you guys change your oil.

Are you the type that religiously change it every 3000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first?

Do you stretch it out to 5000 or 7500 miles?

Do you wait until it's molasses and the engine struggles just to turn over?

Every 5k like clockwork. Anything but "no name" even though the "big name" is probably the same stuff.

I stretch it out as long as I can.

I've actually used oil from ShopRite before.

It's the cheapest preventative maintenance a person can give their vehicle so mine get done every 5000 km's without fail.

As far as what oil. Just a decent 5 - 30 warranty approved oil works for me. If I lived in a harsh climate as I did up until 6 years ago then it would have to be synthetic.

My manual also recommends every 5K. I do it on time (maybe a few hundred miles over if I take an unexpected trip and don't get in to get it changed beforehand). I take it to the dealership (only a few dollars more than a cheapo oil change place) so I have no clue what kind of oil gets put in there, LOL

Mostly town driving here, so 3,000 on the button. I have used Havoline, Walmart's Tech brands, Castrol, and a few others I can't recall. I run 10W-30 in warmer months, in the winter, I use 5W-30 so it'll start nicer in the cold.

I get my oil changed at Mr. Lube. They use synthetic and I take my car in every 10,000 kms (6000 miles, I think).

While we're on the subject of car maintenance, I have a question. The mechanics at Mr. Lube are constantly trying to push all these different flushes on me...engine flush, transmission flush and what not, as well as air filters, oil filters and something that cleans the gas line (?). How much of that is actually necessary and how often?

Not all cars are the same but if you still have the manual it should tell you what the manufacturer recommends. For the women out there trust me they are not picking on you. They do it to me every time.

I actually stopped going to the place I used to get my oil changed at after the mechanic THREATENED to put on my paperwork that I was 2K over on my oil change when I refused to let him do a total engine cleaning on a fucking Toyota w/ 15K miles on it.

Manufacturers specifications 5K - 7.5K depending on driving conditions. Follow all manufacturers specs for all maintenence. I've gotten 200,000 miles on several vehicles doing that, and they were still running when I sold them. Got a 1992 Chevy K1500 with over 300,000 and still kicking.

Some people swear by synthetic - but I think it's over rated for the average vehicle. If the manufacturer says synthetic, then I'd use synthetic and follow their maintenance intervals.

I'm curious what cars state to get the oil change done every 7.5k miles? Toyota did that once then had to change the wording back to 5k because what they found out was that people being people, they would let the oil change slide a couple of grand on the odometer. So, instead of 7.5k miles every oil change, people were getting oil changes done every 9-10k instead, and the engines were shown to have an increased chance to sludge.

Very gently.

On a side note, I highly recommend Toyotas. It seriously takes me like 5 minutes to figure out how to open my hood anytime I have to do so (and, for the record, that's always to jump someone else off, LOL).
