So I gather Direct Access is kicking off this weekend. I know there have been a few preview courses as well. I've read about it, but can someone who has actually done the course share what it was like and what they got out of it? I'd be curious to hear some things firsthand.

I just did the Direct Access Course, and I really heard some things I never heard before in any Landmark course. A lot of it involved new distinctions involving the latest in brain science. One thing that really struck me was the idea that if you have an issue you have been unsuccessfully working on hard for a long time, then your brain will see important this area is, and in order to survive life, will generate patterns to have you take the exact same actions you've taken before. In other words, the repetitive intensity of focus on a place that isn't going well tends to be self-defeating - the brain sees that you've survived that important situation before using a certain set of actions, so it tends towards repeating something that doesn't work, but will enable you to slide by in life. I saw that in order to have something new happen in a couple of those areas of my life, such as my degree of organization, I really had to realize that my life would be fine if I never handled that area. I'd really be ok. In seeing that things really would be ok, then there wouldn't be such a strong need to 'survive' in that area, and that I could actually create something new.
One way the course was distinctly different from other Landmark courses is that the course leader's focus was on making sure that each person got the distinctions thoroughly so that we could apply them in the future in life. Rather than working with a participant to have a breakthrough right now, as they would in the Landmark Forum, and then go take action around that breakthrough this instant, the course leader was making sure that each person would be able to cause their OWN breakthroughs after they left the course. This was extremely empowering. I've already begun to resolve some things that have seemed like issues to me for years, without a lot of drama. |
