Actually I'm not surprised. Did you see the picture in the article? They're all westerners most likely under the JET program to teach in Japan. Nearly all people in the JET program are social rejects obsessed with anime. In fact, it seems Japan mostly attracts these types of visitors.

It's a pity some English teachers couldn't do this in China. There were quite a few nasty English companies in Hangzhou. But it's always something to be wary of when looking for work outside your own country.
