You can get 90% of the benefits of marriage just by cohabitating.

Be careful, Hera. In some anglophone areas, you can gain a common-law spouse by cohabiting!

Married couples actually get a lot of tax breaks in ways that cohabiting (or same-sex couples who can't legally get married) don't have.

You can add your dollar limits together to increase the level of deductions you get from certain types of home debt, for example.

It makes perfect sense if she has a job and makes money, you can help spend it...

Kept men eh?

And it's not like you need to abandon religious traditions just because you abandon your personal religious faith. Not that marriage necessarily has a religious origin.

My parents got married in a civil ceremony without any religious oversight.

However, my dad's family was there - all 175 of them, from China, Taiwan, and North America.

So you could probably argue there was adequate human oversight

The question to marry or not varies depending on your lifestyle.

Some people seek stability and that the next day will be the the one today. Others have a completely different outlook on life, in which marriage doesn't really fit in. These 'others' are still a minority and probably will remain so since most people want that feeling of security found in marriage.

For me, marriage is not even something I would think about. And unless I am to drastically overhaul my life, it's not going to happen anytime soon..

Actually in Slovenia you are better off tax-wise if you don't marry and just cohabit.

My question is for all the posters that have been married for at least 10 years.
If you found yourself single again, (let's not focus how that happens ) do you think you would marry again.

For me I've been married over 20 years, but doubt I would remarry.

Meh, I've heard this whole "if you're not religious, there's no point in getting married" thing before. I'm not religious, and it never entered my mind that I wouldn't get married. To each their own, I suppose.
Respectable society still expects and encourages marriage. Maybe some parts of the world operate differently, but I suspect that they don't.

Thinking about it some more, marriage actually makes more sense for a man, than a woman. Men really don't get any parental rights unless they marry.

If anything the thread title should be changed to: Marriage makes no sense for the modern female.

If women were smart they'd just screw wealthy men when they want to become pregnant. Get child support off them while they form relationships with cooler gangster types. The types who never seem to hold a job which women for some reason find attractive. That way she could have all her bills paid, and still be with the more attractive person in the end.

I would do it again also. But if found myself single now, I doubt I would.

What are the indications that Quebec is different?

Also, I assume that you agree that this is the way respectable society really works in anglophone Canada and the US. Right?

Anecdotes?

Anecdote, but I'd rather not discuss my personal life here.
