If you were a mod, what would make you read a thread

I think I'd at least glance at every thread. I think every thread at least deserves that.

Like teachers. We all know teachers don't read every paper. They just glance at stuff and look for the important stuff.

artofeyyy 05-06-2009 07:13 PM

You try to make the attempt, but I was modding multiple forums so that was difficult. The volume is quite considerable. Imagine having to read all the CIV III threads. Thank god there weren't many.

cestsennY 05-06-2009 07:14 PM

Who, but not where.

steevyjeors 05-06-2009 07:16 PM

boring person vs one of our many as**ats

So you agree that asshats are interesting?

Cheers. http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif

Anyway, you pretty much listed all the things that make me read a thread.

Asher/Drake/George starting a thread or posting in it? Check
Obvious inflammatory title? Check (note: same as above in most cases)

The only one you didn't mention was hugely active thread for no apparent reason (i.e. UAV thread that suddenly gets dozens of posts per hour)

Romarionsion 05-06-2009 07:19 PM

I answered originally as if I was a moderator. I'll answer as just a user. The most obvious answer is interest. If there is no interest, why open the thread. To say what interests me would be lengthy (even I don't know- sometimes I wish I did know my interests so I can find a hobby outside of home, but I digress)

So I'll just list threads on the first page I have opened to get an idea what I read. maybe a short blurb about it

Music thread- I like music' nuff said. But I haven't went thru the entire thing!

Kittie- not sure why I opened this useless thread. Thought it might be some old poster named kittie something

Why are americas so in love with big goverment- I have a mild interest in politics- wasn't sure where they were going, so I read the op.

If this truly is a shchism. opened because I'm curious wtf happened in my absence. nothing useful there, read very little

so who has actually left- opened for same reason as above.

panda love forum- the first thread I opened since my return. With a title like that how can you not open it? Esp. before I found out about the panda issues some people had/have.

otcast- not sure why I opened that one lol.

history of apolyton- I like history, I like poly- 'nuff said

panda porn- not sure why I opened this one. I heard about zoos using panda porn a few years ago

sex leads to pregnancy- seems like an interesting topic

ot mod- well I thought I wanted to be one at one time, seemed like a good place for me to spam

cybershy- reading what the complaint would be. but it wasn't a complaint after all.

and this thread- which seemed like an interesting enough poll.

So in conclusion some things I won't dare open. Like the bible thread. I consider bible stuff to be very boring, and I know very little of the subject (not that has stopped me before http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif). human shields, georgia. While I do enjoy geopolitical drama, I'm just not in the mood- it depresses me often. Texas- well I don't care for Texas- 'nuff said. same goes with cats and communism.

lyrics from a song. Not really a song per se, but a strange mix of sounds and spoken word.

I'll tell you what I won't open. Obvious WPC related threads. This split has become bullshit. Sure, it got some lame asses to post more, about repetitive bullshit. Oh, goody.
I get both lame asses and repetition. So thrilling.
And we liked it! :SNLdanacarveygrumpyoldman:

Yeah, I forgot the frenzied activity threads.

PPActionnGuys 05-06-2009 08:18 PM

I just need to learn how to lurk in invisible mode so that people can't complain about me seeing a thread.

Yes, I did realize that. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

Let em. I've already heard it way too many times.

Maybe I should change "lord of the Ferrets" to "Poly Killer"

artofeyyy 05-06-2009 08:35 PM

I'd read anything gay related first..there's bound to be trouble there. I would also read anything about sluts, badonkadonk and American Idol to see if one of my ex girlfriends is on apolyton.

Fdhwzctl 05-06-2009 08:42 PM

Lots of posts, inflammatory titles, certain posters -- yeah, that pretty much covers it. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif

The new feature that lets you peek at a thread's first line by hovering on its title may also be of use, to catch stealth trolls.

EON (for me anyway) only got special treatment from me in the CIV II MP forum and in the OT. Both places where chest thumping is a requirement. The reason was entertainment and increased traffic. The civ II MP forum was mainly a ghost town, any traffic was appreciated. And MP players weren't chased away because of EON's rantings. NOTE: EON probably served more time banned than almost any other poster so please don't think he got a total free ride because he didn't.

In the OT him and his dozens of DLs provided a vast amount of amusement and anyone that took him seriously was an idiot. The arguements that he had with himself would draw 1000's of views and posts.

I was a touch uncomfortable with what he did in the other on topic area. I was not a specific mod in those forums but I won't totally absolve myself from responsibility. But he was so absurd that other posters ripped him a new hole. I figured that he was too over the top for anyone to take seriously enough to leave because of it. I don't know who he chased specifically. I thought the entertainment value far exceeded any risk in that area. I could have been wrong. If anyone did leave because of that i guess i was wrong, but that really hadn't been demonstrated. It's a judgement call. I'll be the first to say that I wasn't perfect in all my judgement calls when it came to modding, and if any of those decisions hurt anybody, I am truely sorry. I was always doing what I thought was best for the site, (which didn't necessarily make it right and I don't want it to seem like a justification)

Content and Traffic are the lifeline of websites, sometimes you have to make compromises, sometimes you make mistakes. You admit you're wrong on some and move on. But deep in my heart, I don't think how EON was treated had anything to do with the decrease in traffic here but after reading all the comments about it from other posters makes me think I was indeed wrong about that.

I don't know if you will count that as an apology. (i guarentee it was more sincere than others that have been posted recently and I hope you see just how torn I was on the issue) For the record, I really didn't like him and played 3 CIV II MP games with him. My record was 1-2. I played one CIV IV game with him where he promptly declared war on three different civs then claimed we ganged up on him and quit.

Clamping down on ASHER http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/lol.gif http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/lol.gif http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/lol.gif while i don't approve of a lot of things he's done, I was always one of his biggest supporters every time the perma ban arguement started. This was one of the contributing factors to my stepping down. So please don't comment about things that you don't have all the details on. Asher usually deserved all the punishments that he recieved (and he'll probably agree with that in private)
I have never once been banned legally or reasonably. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/mad.gif

The only thing you can do to me is impeach! It is illegal to imprison me or prevent me from posting.

Edit: Oh wait, WTF. rah, did you remove my OT President title? THIS IS TREASON. WHO DID THIS.

WHO DID THIS!!!!

I guess a thread having lots of activity in a short amount of time, would make me check in to see if everything's okay...

People 'round here actually read the threads? I just post in them.

Sertvfdnhgjk 05-06-2009 10:48 PM

Mobius, yes I gave BK and ASHER more rope in their discussions/insults. They're big boys and can handle themselves And thank you for that. http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif

I don't believe I have ever, once complained about Asher's insults to me to the moderators here. Insults to other people sure, but not me.

I always got a kick out of his unending calls for bans/restrictions.
