How's Civ IV?

Civ IV was pretty good, last I played. Haven't the multiplayers (Ming, rah, etc.) moved from Civ II to Civ IV?

When's Civ V coming out? That's the question.

swissloveone 02-05-2009 09:21 PM

Why?

Civ IV is excellent, I still play it regularly with friends.

And Firaxis had better make SMAC II before Civ V http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/doitnow.gif

I love CIV IV. I still play it (with the 2nd expansion, fully patched) consistently.

As for modding... well, it's both great and terrible. Great b/c apparently you can do damn near anything. Terrible because you have to be a wiz to do it. There is no editor like Civ2 (eventually) had. Some people have put together impressive scenarios/modpacks, but it's waaaaaay beyond me.

download them to the C:\programs\firaxis\BtS\mods folder and it works.

We won't laugh, there is some crossover OT - Civ IV. If you ever played Civ II, Civ IV Beyond the Sword (BTS) has a similar pace but with an infinitely smarter AI and a system that prevents overgrowth in the early period. I can't speak to modding as a process, but I do see quite a few mods out there. The Civ IV forums include one on the subject; maybe you could get a rise there. Otherwise, just come to the general forum and ask directly. A few modders hang about there for sure. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

I didn't much care for Civ. III, so I ignored Civ IV for a long time. Then Lancer sat me down and had a little talk with me. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/complain.gif I first got Civ IV -- Warlords; it was good. http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gifhttp://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif Then I bought the "Beyond the Sword" expansion; it is great!! http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gifhttp://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gifhttp://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gifhttp://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gifhttp://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif

Corporations are still a little hinkie http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/huh.gif and I hope they get to be more understandable in Civ. V. But the use of culture, spies, religion, etc. in BtS adds diminsions to the game which take my breath away!

Civ4 is really good. I didn't do any modding but the regular gameplay plus expansions was enough to keep me occupied for years (with my limited time to play).

nonDosearrany 02-05-2009 09:28 PM

I was, indeed, speaking about the process of modding, not the results.

Krill attacks the forum I am in almost every day. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/mad.gif Oh the blasphemy. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/angry.gif Way more flame wars and childish excursions on CFC. Not worth the hassle most of the time. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/bash.gif

Anckzxik 02-05-2009 09:39 PM

I never could get used to the cartoony piggish 3D graphics of the game, but the gameplay was okay.

UlceskLialels 02-05-2009 09:53 PM

Compared to CFC? They're dead. And our demogame teams from this site are full of idiots.

Flerdourdyged 02-05-2009 09:59 PM

Abuse the slowpokes (who, of course, move faster than light as compared to the SP players)! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/angry.gif

I've never played MP, but I know exactly which side of the boundary I'd be on, especially if I survived to the later turns when managing all the cities takes forever. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/frown.gif

In most cases, I move my units, end my turn, and then do whatever city maint I can while waiting for the other players to finish their turn. Sometime I run out of time but how critical is it really if you missed maximizing a city for a turn or two. The only time that time is really critical for me is when I'm at war. I'd rather allocate my precious seconds to managing my army then my cities and workers. So sometimes during heavy wars my cities suffer a touch. No biggie. And if you use the key shortcuts and are experienced with stack and partial stack attacks, the combat can be done quickly. (and the quicker you are is usually to your advantage)

It's actually not as bad as a lot of SP players think. It's just a slightly different mindset that you can adapt to in just a few games.

Damn you! Damn you all to hell/Pasagardae!

I've just bought this for under £12 (including postage), and am looking forward to wasting what remains of my life conquering the world/reaching AC. I stopped playing Civ III because the resource requirements drove to madness - a large world with only 1 oil square FFS, but this should be excellent. Give me 12 years, and I'll be ready for MP. Or married with children who will be ready for MP instead. But I forgot to use the 'poly link to Amazon. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/frown.gif Does it even exist any more?

isopsmypovA 02-05-2009 11:15 PM

This thread is making me want to buy Civ4.

Must... fight... urge...

No... disposable... money...

hotelhyatt 02-06-2009 01:28 AM

My, that's sad to hear http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/frown.gif

TSVIDeo 02-06-2009 02:45 PM

Hold on - wait a minute. Gimme a break... This is a site commited to civ pretty much, and all of you guys (and you, too, AC), who post here frequently never played Civ4?! Get the **** out and dont dare to return before you beat the game in every possible manner!!! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.gif Miiiing ! Miiii-iiiiing - get them out !!! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.gif (just kidding obvisouly, but still surprised...)

KignPeeseeamn 02-06-2009 06:23 PM

Yeah, III turned me off also, but I kept my head down, continued playing II and prayed for something better in IV.

Fortunately my prayers were answered.

mdUzAMbG 02-06-2009 06:38 PM

Civ3 was far less flawed than Civ2, mind.
