I never really understood burning and destroying your neighborhood as a political statement. (I'm mad as hell and I'm going to burn down my home!) Go destroy another neighborhood if you want to make a political point.

The Times correspondant there is the first account I've seen so far from someone who actually knows the area and has been talking to local people. From his description it sounds like a reaction to poor policing of immigrant areas.

Seriously, burning cars and shooting at police because some probably stoned kids killed themselves by crashing on a probably stolen bike into a police car? You've got to show them their place. You've got to hit them so hard that they finally adopt French ways assimilate instead of banding up into ghettoes and hating those who welcomed them into their country.

But we have a lot of people from Turkey etc and while there are surely problems with integration they are not rioting all the time. So pointing exclusively to immigration doesn't explain it IMO.
