Nope, they have passports which arenīt mandatory
and only required if leaving the country.

The only means widely available to identify american citizens at the moment seems to be their driving licence and their SSN (Social security number)

I have one. It's called a "driver's license". Most Americans have them. More than likely if a national ID card ever came into existence the driver's license would do as a substitute.
