The 5th commandment

Hello all. What is the deal with the 5th commandment? The first 4 deal with man's relationship with God, the last 6 deal with man's relationship with man. We have: Don't murder (6) Don't commit adultery (7) Don't steal (8) Don't lie (9) Don't covet (10) These are all pretty general.. But number 5 is to honor your father and mother. And this has extra associated with it (that your days may be long upon the earth). What is special about honoring your mother and father? It seems to be one of the general things that is common in all cultures, but I am looking at it from a Judeo-Christian prospective. Jon Miller Whoever was sitting around making up commandments that he was going to claim were written by God had a son who didn't listen to him, so he stuck one in there about that. |

That goes outside of the Judeo-Christian prospective, and goes against the point that it is in all cultures (I think), including ones where it isn't tied to religion. We can expand the discussion to include other prospectives, and I would be interested to know a culture where it wasn't part of the culture to respect your father and mother. And to the jokers who say this one, while there are some elements as such, it is also in the culture to respect your parents.. so it isn't an example. JM |

If you didn't honor your mother and father, you'd have not reason to continue on the same stupid religious traditions as them. |

Don't lie (9) Dont bear false witness, slight difference. Lying to harm the innocent... You know, a journalistic standard over at Fox
|
Actually it's "Thou shalt not bear false witness againt thy neighbor".
|
Why should it take court? Why wouldn't your word be good always?

Remember, different religions have different Commandments.
"Which 10 Commandments" Link In the Catholic, the 5th Commandment is Thou Shalt Not Kill. In the Jewish and Protestant, the 5th Commandment is "Honor thy Father and Mother." |

Cathechism of Catholic Church
SECTION TWO THE TEN COMMANDMENTS CHAPTER TWO "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF" ARTICLE 4 THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you.4 He was obedient to them.5 The Lord Jesus himself recalled the force of this "commandment of God."6 The Apostle teaches: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother,' (This is the first commandment with a promise.) 'that it may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth."' http://www.vatican.va/archive/catechism/p3s2c2a4.htm |

I absolutely love being a parent. That doesn't mean certain things weren't delayed until a more opportune time.
Why are couples waiting until a later age to have children? To get their career started more easily. Hard to do that when you have to make sure you're at the day care by 6. That said, I'll repeat, I LOVE it. |

then why does the idea of forgoing those things deserve respect or merit?
its part of the territory of being a parent. its not extra special |
