For those of you in the Washington-Baltimore area who enjoy or are interested in the DR's bachata tradition, there's a movie that will be showing 16 June in Silver Spring, MD at the American Film Institute's center there. It's called "Santo Domingo Blues," and is cosponsored by AFI & the Discovery Channel. It's promo'd as follows:
SANTO DOMINGO BLUES Alex Wolfe DOMINICAN REPUBLIC/USA, 2003, 75 MINUTES Once banned on radio in the Dominican Republic, bachata music captures the raw stories of the disenfranchised Dominican poor. Now, thanks to the immigrant community in New York City, the market for the sounds of Luis Vargas and others is thriving.
