Default The closing of Rossini's.
There have been many rumours and theories surrounding the recent closing of a long time restaurant and music venue that also featured Jazz.....Rossini's. Of course at it's peak, pianist Linton Garner was one of the main reasons to go to this casual and friendly bistro in the midst of Kitsilano at 1505 Yew. After Linton's passing there was still much worthwhile music to catch at Rossini's. It was run by Arni May, a drummer and businessman, and his family. It became a Kitsilano institution.

The basic reasons for the closing of Rossini's were financial problems encountered by Mr. May and the deterioration of his health. There were problems as well with the building's owner who wanted more and more money for the rent but would not do anything to repair or upgrade the deteriorating building. Even though Jazz music was less of a focus for Rossini's in the last few years (post-Garner) it remained an outlet for live music. It is a sad passing and because of circumstances above, Mr. May decided to pack it in. Of course, it will eventually re-open in this prime location and it's anybody's guess as to what it will be. Regardless of people's opinions about Mr. May, he maintained a music policy and added to Vancouver's music scene. I wish him well and hope that his health and financial problems ease.

As Gavin Has said there have been many rumours about Rossini's closing some true some not so true. So i will tell you the simple basics here. My dad is very ill yes, he has several health issues at this point in his life, we are all hoping for the best at this point and time. Second we have been trying to tie down a lease for several years now, in november we started to discuss a long lease with the lanlord as we had some Investers that wanted to invest in Rossini's, these were people that cared and loved what we have done over the last 18 years in business, And through many months of trying to tie down a long lease the landlord just would not budge, it was not about money that the landlord wanted to increase on our lease , it was simply haveing a long term lease. Without a long lease , we could not plan the renovation we wanted to do to reinvent Rossini's.

All i want to say is that we had a great place for 18 years we were a success because of the local and international performers that graced our stages , and as well the fantastic and loyal customers, and our staff. we wish all good luck in the future and good health.

Regards

Shayne May and Family
