Default JATP: What would you give.....
I just came across a program from a Jazz At the Philharmonic concert I attended at the Verdun Auditorium in Quebec back in 1956.........
The line-up featured:
The Swingers:
Flip Phillips, Illinois Jacquet, Roy Eldridge, Oscar Peterson, Jo Jones, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis.
The Modern Jazz Quartet:
John Lewis, Percy Heath, Milt Jackson, Connie Kay.
The Moderns:
Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Sonny Stitt, plus the MJQ.
The Gene Krupa Quartet:
Gene Krupa, Eddie Shu, Dave McKenna, John Drew.
The Oscar Peterson trio:
Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis.
AND..
Ella Fitzgerald.

What would you give to hear and see this concert today??

Man, not a bad show!

I have a JATP program. Not sure what year it was. I believe it was in Victoria. I seem to recall my dad saying it was at the armory. He went to it and collected the autographs on it of Al McKibbon, Coleman Hawkins, Meade "Lux" Lewis, Tom Archie, Roy Eldridge and Helen Humes. This had to be in the 1940s. Here's the program:

Guy, would it be possible for you to post a scan of this program? Although it's well known that one of Monk's earliest recording sessions was with Coleman Hawkins (and he recorded for Blue Note with Lucky Thompson) this is the first I've ever heard that they toured together (and came to Canada no less) and that Monk participated in a JATP tour whatsoever - especially in the 40s which would line up with the Hawkins stuff. I know some folks who would definitely be interested in this (besides me!) ... N

Who knew. This is amazing. As Nou said we are aware of the Hawk-Monk connection but touring.............wow! Monk and Hawk recorded together in Oct. 1944 and the drummer was Denzil Best.

Tom Archia was there as well. He was at one time one of the most prominent tenor players in Chicago......battled and won with Ammons, Freeman, Stitt etc.

A similar show was in Vancouver in 1957: "The Birdland Stars of '57" which you can see the ad for at: http://www.greggsimpson.com/Ads.html

The lineup there was Sarah Vaughn, Bille Eckstine, Basie with Joe Williams, Chet Baker, Zoot Sims, Lester Young, Bud Powell, Phineas Newborn and Terry Gibbs among others.

The Georgia Auditorium also had a JATP concert or two and I believe both Bird and Billie Holliday played there.
