Vt. Teacher Accused Of Giving 'Liberal' Vocab Test

POSTED: 6:22 pm EST November 25, 2005

BENNINGTON, Vt. -- A Vermont teacher is facing questions after giving a vocabulary quiz that included digs at President George W. Bush.

Bret Chenkin, who teaches social studies and English at a high school in Bennington, said he isn't shy about sharing his liberal views with students as a way of prompting debate. But he said the quiz questions were "tongue-in-cheek."

The test asked students to choose the right word to complete a sentence. One question was on the meaning of the word "coherent." Answered correctly, it read: "I wish Bush would be coherent for once during a speech, but there are theories that his everyday diction charms the below-average mind, hence insuring him Republican votes."

The school superintendent said such practices are "absolutely unacceptable."

Chenkin said he's willing to change his teaching methods if some are concerned. He said he'll "put in both sides."

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT???

Good thing I don't have children in that classroom. Unacceptable bringing political views into the classroom period. IMO.

Yep, unacceptable. But funny - and as for that particular dig at Bush, quite true.

But we can't have teachers telling children funny true things.

Id it happens everywhere. I had a really nice teacher (very interesting) in history and he often put digs to the democrats because he was a centre right republican.

That was 1997. Who knows if his politics changed? My town really shifted its votes to kerry in '04 bush won by the slimmest of margins which was pretty incredible because my district was bright red in '00, '96, and so on. It hasn't voted dem in over 40 years.

Then again, I think this thread should be moved to politics since its political.
