Cabbie Makes Extra Special Delivery First Day On Job
Man Had Watched Birthing On Discovery Channel UPDATED: 9:45 am EST November 14, 2005 CHICAGO -- Cabbie Nedal Haddad isn't about to forget his first day on the job. He started with three passengers and ended up with four. Haddad picked up a pregnant woman in suburban Chicago, along with her mother and sister, who asked to be taken to the hospital quickly. The mother-to-be was in labor, but the to-be part didn't last long. Haddad pulled over, as the pregnant woman's relatives started screaming. He ordered them out of the cab, and jumped into the back seat to help. Haddad's a father of three, but had never been in the delivery room with his wife. "She kept saying, 'I'm in pain,' and I said, 'If your water broke, just let me know.' That's all I told her, I don't know why I told her that," Haddad said. Haddad said he didn't know what to do at first, but then he remembered something he saw on TV. "I remembered one time I saw on the Discovery Channel how to deliver babies," Naddad said. "I looked at the baby and it wasn't doing anything, and I thought maybe something was wrong right there, so I grabbed the baby by the feet, gave it a little shake, and the baby started crying and I said, 'The baby should be OK now.” Paramedics arrived soon after baby Gabrielle was born. "We'd like to report a happy mother after delivering her baby on I-88 this morning, and a healthy baby girl, 6 pounds, 14 ounces, 19½ inches long. Both mom and baby are doing great," Dr. Peter Weeks said. Three Illinois State Police troopers also arrived at the scene and assisted with the delivery, ISP Trooper Doug Whitmore said. "He understood the urgency of the situation and did the right thing," Whitmore said of Haddad's actions. "Maybe the hand of God also helped me out? I don't know," Haddad said. Mother, baby and cab driver are doing fine. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
