Default Greg Buium
We don't often have positive things to say about jazz and the local press. I, for one, believe that if jazz music, and other worthy art forms, were given their due consideration by mainstream media they’d have larger audiences and be healthier for it. The media seem to believe there’s a limited audience for these things so little consideration is called for. It’s an illogical, self-fulfilling, and inevitably harmful position.

That said, the appearance over the last few months of writer Greg Buium in the pages of the Vancouver Sun is cause for celebration. Buium is a highly regarded, informed music journalist whose work has appeared in Downbeat, Coda, Cadence, The Globe & Mail, etc. His tastes and knowledge are broad and inclusive. Just in the last few months he’s covered the range of artists from Dal Richards to the NOW Orchestra, Jim Hall to Tony Wilson. His stories have covered the jazz festival, the opening of Rime, and events at the Cellar, and elsewhere.

Last Saturday's Sun (Jan 22) included a half-page overview by Greg on some highlights of the upcoming jazz season in Vancouver. If you missed it, PM me and I'll forward the text of the article to you.

To my knowledge, Greg is a Vancouver native, recently retuned to his home town after about five years in Toronto.

Marke Andrews was the Sun jazz writer for many years. I was dismayed to learn that he was moved to the business section some time ago. This was before I heard about the addition of Buium to the Arts and Entertainement section. I believe Buium contributes on a freelance basis. Marke did a fine job for many years. He was etxrememly supportive of my efforts with the Vancouver Jazz Society dating back to the mid seventies and I couldn’t have asked for better coverage of events put on by myself and others back then. Bob Smith also had a regular jazz column in the Sun in those days. Amazing to think of that now!

I encourage everyone to drop a line to the Sun thanking them for this great boost to the local jazz scene and encouraging its continuation.

POSTSCRIPT: Balancing this good news is some rather dismaying news regarding our venerable CODA magazine. More about this soon.
