In one of the design threads I mentioned about me going to Spain and the possibility of me staying there. Well I didn't stay there and am back in England. Basically I had the chance to buy a bar, the owner needs to sell up as it's been a bad winter due to the ex-pats not having enough euros to spend on eating out/drinking thanks to the poor value of the £. If I'd have took it on then i'd face the same problems. It's not the ideal spot, and it relys on regular Brits who live there coming in. The current owner has some ideas on how to boost business, but it's too much of a risk for me to take this on!

Anyway, here are some pics and vids (the youtube upload has made the vids blocky? Not like that on my phone camera!)

I spent quite a bit of time at there, my brother was living in La Marina for a while. When he first moved at there we drove down there, in about 36 hours which was good going. He is now back in Brittain after splitting from his wife, quite common for a lot of youngish couples at there. I also have another brother who has a place in Guadamar, goes there a few times a year for holidays and loves it.

I haven't been there for a couple of years now, and although the economy was booming at the time, employment was hard to get for English even then. Now I think I read that unemployment in Spain is now 13%.

One thing I noticed was that it was a lot colder in winter than what people tell you, and everyone
says it was nicer the year before, don't beleave them.

I've still got mine, and I'd rather die than move.
If everyone keeps moving, Britain will be full of imigrants, and will lose it's identity - so I'm staying put, thank you very much.

Thanks for the pics, PRODIGY Looks like a relaxing trip, and as predicted I'm super jealous. I can't say that I blame you about wanting to move to a place like Spain, but as some have mentioned, you will likely find that the very problems you are trying to escape also exist there, and are in many cases worse. Spain has been perhaps the hardest hit country in Western Europe by this financial crisis; its economy was based heavily on real estate and construction, which has quite literally tanked, especially on the Southern Coast which is very heavily dependent on investment from expats like yourself. And while that may mean good deals on housing (purchasing anyway, renting in Spain is still notoriously expensive, from what I have heard), good luck finding a decent job to pay for it. Plus, under a socialist administration I think you will find that the tax structure is very unfriendly as well, although the myriad of social services one would expect can offset that to a degree.

Sorry to hear you're unsatisfied with the state of things in the UK. In any event I hope your trip was a breath of fresh air, something to keep you going and keep you optimistic. Spain is such an enchanting place and, like you, I wouldn't mind retiring there or having a house there myself. Although I'd prefer a place with some history--in Madrid, Segovia, Toledo, Hondarribia, Avila, or somewhere in La Rioja
