"Could care less" (when used to indicate that you have no interest at all) is a ridiculous and offensive debasement of the English language that is sadly becoming accepted as an idiom.

Your example is just someone getting their tense wrong.

I really don´t get it, aren´t the people implying that "could care less" and "couldn´t care less" mean the same thing the ones in the wrong ?
I see two different meanings to 2 similar phrases.

The irritation is with people saying "well I could care less" when they wish to imply that they don't care at all, therefore actually meaning "I couldn't care less". The phrase being nonsensical as it implies the opposite of their intended meaning.

But how do you know what they wish to imply ?
I for one actually use both terms in specific situations.

Context. When i witness people saying "they could care less" from the context of the subject matter and their reaction to it, its pretty obvious they intend to imply that they couldnt possibly care any less about the subject at that time"

I could care less is an odd way of expressing a genuine implied interest in a subject, however little, as "i care" / "i kinda care" suffices. Given the simplicity of the latter statements its seems as if the "i could care less" is in fact contradictory to what someone may want to imply, inkeeping with its popular usage.

It seems to me "I couldnt care less" is used to end a conversation on the topic not to feign interest. "ah whatever i couldnt care less man". I could care less/ i care a bit opens the possibility of further debate as to why you do in fact care a bit. Every time i see it in place of I couldn't care less its used to end a discussion as it is of little relevance, unimportant or the user is completely against the motion so dismisses it.

I could care less is more of a cheeky colloquialism as if to say, ah well i could care a bit but i dont. which make its usage illogical as the end statement is simply "i dont care"/ "i couldnt care any less"

Either i could care less or i couldnt care less are direct and literal in how you interpret them, so they are not idioms. depending on where you live and in what country idioms will vary by popularity for example. Give the dog a bone, polishin the ole hamster, kicking the bucket. even skating on thin ice. Even the good old f*** it in its usage is an idiom (missing the nail, isn't going to result in you wanting to engage in intercourse with it)

Well that's how 'could care less', sounds to the English. The phrase is so well known that saying differently, even when you mean it that way, just sounds wrong. Unless saying it differently rings like a pun and makes you sound smarter saying wrong will always make you sound like George Bush Jr.

He clearly struggled with it so tried to jump out of it as soon as possible, it wasnt his choice not so say the rest, he clearly couldnt, not the most articulate of public speakers now was he; The President

I have trouble suffering through someone trying to explain why it's "couldn't care less". It's so logical, you'd think people would get it straight away. Especially since the opposite, "could care less", makes absolutely no sense at all ever. You can't even come up with a reasonable excuse. It's just wrong.

2 friends walking down the street... Homeless man is around the corner asking for change. Firend #1 hands a dollar and both friends move on. Friend #2 asks why friend 1 gave money to the useless bum. Friend 2 says he couldnt care less if a homeless bum needed money, it is most likely his fault for being in that positoin. Agreed. two thers that really annoy me are
"Oh, the humanity" when something horrible happens when it should, IMO at least, be "Oh the inhumanity"!
It's not as bad as the American derived* use of "quote, unquote" followed by the supposed quote! FFS, is is to hard to say "quote" THEN the quote followed by "unquote" when the quote is finished!

*I may be a little harsh there, but I first noticed it in the American broadcasts and it has, regretably, spread to other countries.
