Don't worry - I'm not asking for medical advice.
I just wondered if anyone here has any experience of what office chairs are available that are designed for someone with back problems? My bad back is flaring up again, - and given that I spend 8 hours a day sat on my arse at work, I figure that my 5-year old office chair is most likely part of the problem. My employer has said they'll buy me a specifically designed chair - but the problem is we don't know what I need! What are my options regarding chairs specifically designed for people with back problems? I'm also off to the docs in the next couple of days to try and get a decent diagnosis, as so far they seem to be treating the symptoms rather than looking at the cause. I'm not overweight - and I'm physically fit and active, so I have no idea why my back is causing me such problems of late.... |

At Nokia we had Herman Miller Aerons and they were exceptional. Initially, they were buying them for employees with back problems but when we moved to a new office everybody got one. I'll pass the info onto our office manager tomorrow. They are a bit pricey though! |

Yes, they're so expensive that they have options like cars do! It's more than I'd ever pay for a chair for myself, but really no chair that I have ever bought or even sat in compares. It really is the Rolls Royce of office seating and it's suitable for both proper seating form and slouching.
I have tried chairs bearing the Obus Forme name and they were definitely designed to do healthy-seeming, twisty things with your back but they took a totally different approach from the Aeron's floating in a seated position sort of approach. |

My mum suffers from a bad back, at her work they had a company come in. They measured her body size (leg length, arm length, back dimensions etc), measure desk heights, make sure the chair being made was installed with correct seating positions for her.
The end total of the chair was around £700 but her work paid out for it. I'll get her to grab the manufacturers name next time she is in work. Also it may help if you use a foot rest, it helped my mum out alot. |
