Lol apple has a 30 dollar AA charger that charges just 2 AA batteries... for 30 bucks... You can buy a 4AA charger that charges batteries in under 15min from Best buy for 30 bucks. not to mention online you can pay peanuts for a charger.
It comes with the charger and six hi-performance batteries than can apparently hold a charge for up to 10 years. I paid $30 for an energizer charger than only came with 4 standard Ni-MH batteries, so I don't think Apple is asking for too much.

The current AA Duracell NiMH batteries I use, that I purchased for about $20 with the charger, power my mouse at work for just over a day.

no it doesnt i'm just fueling OHP
I don't care about apple products. If people want to spend that much and are happy with the price/product then more power to them. It's when they start parading around going "My apple product is superior"... That I have a problem.

10 years... I find that hard to believe.
What type of battery is it?
It sure as hell cant be LiPo ore LiFePo4. Even those don't last 10 years. Plus they are flat not a AA shape (not possible to be AA)

Edit: I just checked... Stil NiMh batteries... unless APPLE has magically created a new type of NiMh battery that lasts 10 years.... Oh wait they haven't. Don't believe everything you read buddy. 10 years for a consumer level NiMh AA battery. That is like trying to find a Dodge Neon with 100k+ miles.

Remember they just claim to last for 10 years. When they stop working after two it's because you are holding them wrong.

Ok apple is full of ****
First of all...
To have a battery maintain it's full capacity charging ability and to make it last long... You TRICKLE charge it the remaining 1/3 of its capacity (talking about NiMh). People buy high end chargers that are fully programmable to get the best out of their batteries.
This small wall mounted charger most likely charges at a .6-.9 amp. I was not able to obtain how long it takes to charge but generally these AAs that are NiMh and rechargeable have an 1800ish mAh capacity. Depending on the capacity of the battery that apple gives you and the "charge" times it claims I could figure out what amps it charges at.
But a real charger charges at .5C (C rating = the Capacity for exampl 1800mAh battery = 900mAh charge rate or .5C) and then the remaining 1/3 of the NiMh battery goes into trickle mode and takes hours.
You follow these rules and your NiMh batteries last a while with good charge (not 10 years....). The energizer 15min charger REALLY kills batteries FAST but given how cheap they are it is a fair trade off. You still save money compared to buying Alkaline. The energizer charger can reduce battery life by up to 2/3rd and even reduce capacity by 1/3. But it's still more uses than Alkaline.
I don't understand why apple wont go cutting edge and use LiFePo4 batteries... They are AWESOME. They are stable unlike Li-Poly batteries and they can be charged at 10C+ rates! For example if you use a 2S LiFePo4 battery with an 1800mAh capacity then you can charge it at 18A!!! Thats like a full charge in 6min! No damage! No reduced life!

Have had the Duracell setup since early-2007... bought it for my Mighty Mouse (When my primary laptop was my MBP), used constantly for days on end without needing a recharge?

Or let me guess, non-Apple mouse on your end, and the Mighty Mouse I had used its super-magical-spectacular-awesome-non-death-grip battery saving technology to capitalize on the inferior non-Apple batteries? [thumbup]

Anyway, not sure what the exact model is but it is a Logitech BT mouse which came with my diNovo desktop.

It could be that this mouse sucks at power management or the batteries have gone through too many cycles.

Also, for the record, I absolutely hate Apple mice. I do like their trackpads though but only for their laptops.

Even if you move a mouse around constantly so that it never goes into power saving mode it should last about a week on decent rechargeable batteries.

My magic mouse lasts about a month on decent rechargeables and a logitech laser mouse lasts a few months.

Saying all that, mutelight's only last a day it seems so that must be taken as the industry standard. [rofl]

I made a mistake. Apple is right the batteries can last up to 10 years...
If you charge them right and discharge them right using a charger every month without ever using the batteries in any device. Maybe... Maybe then they might last 10 years.

What kills NiMh batteries is using them too much (high draw) or using it too little as in leaving it half full for months.

If you charge them right and discharge them right using a charger every month without ever using the batteries in any device and leaving them partially charged for long periods of time. Maybe... Maybe then they might last 10 years.
Just checking but didn't think they were saying they would last 10 years without charging, did you? I think they just mean that they can retain most of their capacity for 10 years.

No no I meant if you use a high end charger that does 2/3 constant 1/3 trickle and it also has a discharge mode where you can select the rate.

Batteries last a while if cycle correctly but in normal use they don't get cycled by normal consumers and with cheap chargers they dont get charged right. (NiMh)

Apples 10 year number is possible if you just cycle the batteries once every month (correctly) with a high end charger and never use the batteries in any device. Pretty much a paper weight.
Basically their number is not realistic for real world, it's misleading conditions for the 10 years to be even possible.
Maybe apple meant combined total use is 10 years with all 3 pairs of batteries. That is reasonable and realistic. Avg 3 years per pair.

Ah I see what you are saying. It is definitely safe to say that those stats are created from the utmost "ideal" situations to retain that performance but then again you don't see any cell phone manufactures letting people know their phones will only hold 80% of their charge after ~200 ("ideal") cycles.

An overstatement by them to say the least. Although, they can be fairly reserved with their battery runtime estimates in products.
