ban on 24hr drinking...

cos I haven't http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/wacko1.gif

I think there are very few places, and the media as usual is blowing things out of proportion.

Pubs should be encouraging responsible drinking, instead of running promotions and events that encourage people to get shat-faced.

Yeh, in Southport where I'm from a few bars are open until 7am (or when people fall out), and you can find another one open around the same time for "breakfast". At least 6 bars there I can think of have 24 hour licenses.

Southport is a weird one. It's got a lot of incredibly rich people and well off people (Alan Hansen, Kenny Dalgliesh, Mark Lawrenson and Ronnie Whelan - all ex-liverpool players - live within pissing distance of my olds) and no really deprived area (the worst parts are a council estate where nearly everyone owns their own house), the town centre is stunning by day, but by night it attracts all the down and outs and winos. Go figure.

It's a bit of a catch-22 though because they obviously want to sell lot's of drink.

Any business in any market exists to make maximum profit, but must navigate the myriad of regulations that often prevent them from maximising profit (for various good reason). Applicable regulations for the alcohol industry would and should be no different.

nothing wrong with offering a promotion for cheap drinks. it is up to the person drinking to take a responsibility and not the bar.

Partially yes - but when you are selling a substance that is both addictive and damaging to your health, a certain degree of responsibility should also be expected from the vendor.

Don't get me wrong - I am a very strong believer in personal responsibility - but there are certain situations such as the sale of alcohol where I believe that the vendor also needs to act responsibilty.

This is true, because the more you drink the less you maintain your sense of personal responsibility.

Morageort 07-23-2010 02:10 AM

hmm, I wonder if they've tried doing deals on non/low alcoholic drinks

It was still your initial choice to drink, thus still your choice. Personal responsibility doesn't disappear because you are drunk.

no but diminished responsibility begins to encroach personal responsibility.

Most people don't realise how badly that alcohol has affected them.
