Default Bullying on the Intardnet...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/he...0/10002963.stm

As many as 340,000 children and teenagers are regularly bullied over the internet or on their mobile phones, according to a new report.
The charity Beatbullying said young people experienced most abuse on the instant messaging service MSN and the social networking site Bebo.
"We know the consequences of online bullying are just as traumatic as those of face-to-face bullying," said the organisation's boss Emma-Jane Cross. This just seems ridiculously stupid to me. People can block/ignore users, so how is this even possible [rofl]

indeed, I'm not understanding how they can be the same thing as something in the playground, if you are getting abused over the internet, just tell them to **** off and then block them.

unless I'm missing something.

I think it's because there are more ways to bully people over the internet than just shout at them, sure they can block them but with things like Facebook (i've seen it myself) people can make groups or events such as "Desolator is a ****" () and write abuse in there, photoshop pictures, get loads of other people from school to join the group also writing abuse... the person can't block that. It's pathetic and I've seen it myself but thats school kids for you

its still a far cry from actual bodily harm, being hounded and followed during and after school etc..., still can be ignored, all depends if the target person is going to QQ so easily over it.

I still don't see how its on the same level at all.

To be honest, the internet is probably the best place to be able to retaliate. Many Physical bully's will pick on someone a lot lesser in build than themselves. Its hard to retaliate due to this.

On the internet, everyone is equal.....[thumbdown]

The problem is that it's people they go to school with that are generally bullying them on the internet. They have just found a new outlet for being a knob.

True true, but conversely on the internet you are removed from the situation as well, everyone on the net tends to be a lot gobbier and more likely to say things they wouldn't in real life (think of trolls), so while in real life it may be one big guy physically hounding you, on the internet it may be a lot of people saying and doing low level things that they wouldn't normally.

They are different but I can see how both would be damaging - depends on the mentality of the person being subjected to it really. Physical or mental bullying... which would you prefer?

EDIT - As Moose said, back say 20 years ago, typically if you were being bullied at school once the day or week is over you could go home and avoid it until you had to go back, with everyone being so "socially-networked" now-a-days it may be a case that they are hounded at school then go home to find they are being hounded over the internet, it's removed the ability to escape.

Bullying comes in many forms, yes online bullying exists (it's a big problem at my work). As mentioned many children go to school/class with the people behind it and this is an additional outlet for them to get their digs in. It seems most of the people that are doing it via MSN etc are carrying it on at school so it's not solely internet or anything..(hope that makes some sense).

If you look at how easily people get riled up on internet forums, it makes sense to me that online bullying would be an issue. Imagine if the person who flamed you today, was sitting next to you tomorrow in class. I doubt it would be a pleasant experience.

Ignoring and blocking are possible exits, but I don't think a lot of people really prefer those options. Maybe ignoring and/or blocking are considered weak, a form of retreat?

So what if it's considered "weak". It's an option. Anyone who doesn't want to be e-bullied can plug pull. If the victim doesn't want to be seen as a ***** then they should stand up to the bully. You've got 2 options: Fight back, or back down.

If someone harassed me via text I'd just MMS them a picture of my oversized genitals with the text "I win".

We should be teaching these kids not to be spineless. We'd be doing them a favor later in life.

Well, obviously this means they need to monitor all internet communications without a warrant/court order.

I wish somebody would monitor all your internet communication and censor the tripe you keep on writing.

Right, because it isn't as if there was an attempt to make it illegal to post anonymously on the internet. The subject of internet monitoring because of e-bullying has been brought up many times, especially after the case where that one girl became an hero because of myspace.

People keep pushing for more monitoring on the interwebs, when the interweb is the only place free of crime and government, or potentially anyway. There's no reason to monitor anything on the internet. Those who don't want to participate can simply log off, or point their browser elsewhere. It's the only place with the potential to offer true freedom because you're not physically present.

"Gnius" was just doing what he does at every opportunity: having a go at UK laws.

Well your laws blow

Anyways, who cares...get some balls and tell them to shut up or just block them. People are turning into sissies.

You just told me to shut up. You're bullying me. I should report you to your authorities.

Doesnt work that way. When you're back at school and everyone talks and laughs about the photoshopped pictures they have seen of you, could you still just "log off"? My ex's son was unfortunately the victim of alot of bullying and I couldnt understand why. He was 12, good looking, sporty, clever, and thats not through pink glasses. Yet the ugly fat ass kids bullied him and put alot of stupid stuff on the internet. I read through a couple of those things and I can imagine that its quite hard to ignore it when you're back at school.

I told him to fight back, unfortunately he "literally" fought back and ended up in the principles office. I remember back in the old days (my school days) things werent as complicated because there was no internet. When someone tried to f**k with you you punched him in the mouth and no teacher ever had a word with you. Today fighting back seems to be even worse than doing the bullying.

Well he did the right thing. Beat the **** out of them!

Schools are completely retarded when it comes to this behavior anyways, the never punish the bully and when you fight back you get in trouble for fighting. At that point, it's defense.

Schools are full of completely stupid rules. I got suspended once for drawing a picture of some dude hacking some guy up with a chainsaw. They called my parents and let me know...luckily they didn't care at all because it's a stupid drawing.
