Default Yorkshire
Hey British Onions

I'm considering a long weekend in Yorkshire (driving up from London, staying 2-3 nights in a B&B).

Any recommendations? We're big fans of nature & architecture.
Looking to take some nice pictures here as well... thinking ruins, castles, churches... beautiful sceneries...

Any ideas appreciated!

There's always York...

The City itself is very nice. Good shopping plus there's still a few quaint little shops. There's the castle walls and keep, plus the Minster as well. The Minster must be one of best 'churches' in the country, inside and out is v nice. Always used to be able to walk to the top as well for a nice view. Not too far from Whitby either, which i pretty picturesque too, and also has Abbey ruins.

I might be biased but York seems like a good base for all of that. Once you're done with York itself, you can venture out to the countryside and see all sorts of ruins, scenery etc. Within an hour, you can drive out to the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors, the East Coast etc.

That reminds me of a story told to us by a guide on a York ghost walk. He was taking a bunch of Texans around the city, during which one of them said, "Is that church pre-war?". [rolleyes]

and go easy on the alcohol because we dont drink shandy up North, unlike our Southern friend above.

York is a place you have to visit, I absolutely love the place. If you want to go all "spooky" then stay in the Golden Fleece http://www.goldenfleece.yorkwebsites.co.uk/

York sounds like a good idea indeed... Seems like a nice place to visit and is pretty much "in the middle" of everything (I've been browsing the web a bit and there seems to be quite a lot of interesting sights both east and west of it. Might just be the best place to stay at!

You could do Ripon and Fountains Abbey better than Whitby Abbey IMO or go to Knaresborough and check out Mother Shipton's cave.

I would recommend Skipton as a base.

Beautiful market town and on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, you can easily head out to places like Bolton Abbey which has some really nice walks around it or anywhere else in the dales - beautiful country side around there. Plus you are within driving distance of Harrogate and other towns which are nice as well.

Me and the wife had a weekend there earlier this year (kind grandparents offered to have the kids for a couple of days and we got a nice little bit of R&R).

Some really nice places to eat (Napiers is absolutely gorgeous food) and some great pubs as well (The Black Horse does a very decent pint!)

Well a slightly different recommendation - I'd recommend West Yorkshire (my wife is from there), slightly more rugged mountains. Leeds is a good launch point, Bradford has been revitalised, lots of industrial revolution history there, Halifax further west has some nice towns and villages around it (Hebden Bridge for example is a good starting point for the Pennine Way).

York is a nice City, but it's a long drive up and then I think you're kinda stuck there.
