I have wondered that too and why do guys have nipples? I mean, we have so much use of them lol..

Anyway, I believe it's a marketing thing as well tech wise it might be hard to push the GHz or that might be rubbish, I am not sure. I wonder when we can see at least a 4GHz dual core on the market that's not overclocked in any way.

I just don't understand the lure of it...

must be some great marketing..

If it was some great marketing wouldn't you think that the majority of computers would be using Quad Cores? The adoption rate is still below 10%.

Ya but dual core then? Hmm..weird indeed. It must be hard to break GHz barriers then. I guess we need a revolution in cooling.

8-core by mid-late 2010, 6-core by early 2010.

Can't wait.

No doubt, those dual cores are monsters.

Probably easier to keep adding cores than to keep making leaps and bounds in speed. More computing power to the customer at a lower cost to the manufacturer.

I use them for virtual servers at work. Not too fussed to upgrade to multicore processors for home use.

Fact of the day: Men have nipples because they are formed before the sex of the baby is decided.

Well, the theory is that more applications will be designed to multi-thread, but the fact of the matter is this is often difficult to implement with a good performance gain. Locking mechanisms (which are needed to synchronize threads and prevent two threads from accessing the same memory at the same time) are expensive, and often it is cheaper to run in one thread than multiple no matter how good of a programmer you are. Often you will see a performance gain in terms of execution time, but it will consume much more resources to handle the tasks.

Programs that do a lot of parallel, independent operations work well for this, most end-user programs don't really meet that description.

Mostly marketing. Its not hard to find threads from developers when these things first came out boasting about all the great things they would be able to do with Multi-threading. Kinda like the bragging about Dx10 and probably soon about Dx11.

Didn't take very long before the promises began getting scaled back........

PhysX probably shows up in more games, and used more effectivly, than Multicore support at this point.

One huge problem with games, is that a single thread is (almost?) always more efficient than multiple threads. If your application runs single threaded, and then you make it multi threaded, what you will usually find is a significant performance loss on machines with a single logical processor (assuming your application is CPU intensive).

Hopefully, they keep making awesome Dual Core CPU's for a while than.

http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000942.html

Though I guess depending on what you are doing, you may benefit from a Quad. I went Quad mainly because I am a huge multitasker, and a lot of what I do benefits from quad cores.

Though I think that it will take some time still, like going from Single to Dual core in the beginning, we had the same kind of conversations. But now, they are 2 vs. 4. It will eventually work its way there. Games might start pushing that way as well. Look at GTA4 for example. Has significant gains using a Quad over a Dual.

Eh? Just because we don't have them on desktops... (Though technically, we could) But Intel has had 6-core CPUs for servers since the end of 2007.

Servers aren't really within the context of this forum, which is why there is a thread asking whether multiple processors are actually worth it.
