Default Microsoft wins a decision to keep Word.
From Dailytech
"Microsoft has won an decision to stay the inunction set to go into effect on October 10 that would have forced Microsoft to stop selling Word without removing some features. The Federal Circuit in Washington said it acted "without prejudicing the ultimate determination of this case."

Don't get me started on that again. I4i developed software for implementing XML in Word, they patented that software and sold the application for several years developing new versions during that time. Microsoft came along took the technology and sold it as a part of Word thus destroying a legitimate business which I4i had developed.

Look at it this way lets say you designed a piece of technology that made every Ford go 10 more miles to the Gallon, you patented the technology and you sold it as an add on for several years then one day Ford comes along they take that patented technology and put it every single one of their cars destroying your business. Wouldn't you think you had a claim against Ford. Or do intellectual property rights not apply to corporations?

If that was legal then I dont see a problem with it. If I were Ford/Microsoft/whoever I would do the same thing. Unless its not legal of course. But I dont have a problem with what Microsoft did. And why should the customer pay extra for stuff that should be in the program/car/whatever in the first place?

And if I invented something that one of the big ones would want, I'd try to sell it as fast as possible to them as long as the patent rights still lie with me and BEFORE they have the time to steal it. If third party vendors make/invent something that would make sense as an integral part of the original software (PDF converter in Word for example) then the developer of that software should have the right to use a good idea and implement it. Of course they shouldnt steal it, but pay for it.

This reminds me about the movie that was about the windshieldwiper guy. Fighting the big ones is all well and good, but you should make sure you have a good chance of winning.

Why would they bother paying you for it when they can just take a bit of time and develop it themselves and pay you nothing? Especially when cases like this go through and create a precedent pretty much guaranteeing that the big company will get away with it time and again. Of course this is stealing your intellectual property, but thankfully the public won't care or support you apparently because it should have been in the program anyway and saves everyone else a couple of bucks ...
