O crap of course nobody cares , frenchy people Bit harsh mate, not everyone likes the French but wouldn't wish this on them.

According to the BBC there may be some British Citizens onboard also.

Sad news.

I certainly care, but it is hard to post when you are asleep.

Anyway, while i doubt it will happen, I hope they find survivors.

I thought he was being sarcastic. Nobody replied to a thread he started in nearly three hours so obviously they don't care about this situation.

SnW - thanks for the heads up but there isn't much useful that anyone can say until they know anything more. Let's just hope that there is a reasonable explanation, as unlikely as that is.

Sadly given the aircraft lost contact during cruise, I fear that there will be no survivors found.

The Atlantic is a big ocean, it could take months to find the wreckage, I hope the radar service was able to pick up the transponder signal where it crashed.

Thunderstorms are dangerous places to be in, even for large jets.

Shenanigans?

They flew through a major thunderstorm cell. You get wind shear in those things and it can rip apart a plane. Winds of over 200km/h going up, then winds of over 200km/h going down right next to each other.

Sometimes it's not possible, a storm near the equator can reach 70,000 feet to meet the tropopause. The pilot's try and fly around them, if that's not possible they turn around, but a pilot never enters a thunderstorm intentionally.

I hope it went quick. I've seen some programs "aircrash investigation" where a plane got damaged so badly at cruising altitude that it was a 5 minute free fall in pieces of the plane.

5 minutes must have been an eternity, strapped in your seat waiting for the impact.[no]

Horror.

At over 30,000 feet you only have 30 secs before you pass out from lack of oxygen (or something like that), hopefully they did not come to their senses once reaching lower alititudes if the plane did break up and they were in an un-controlled free fall

Yeah but what does adrenaline do with you and all other chemicals your body makes when being in danger? Wouldn't that be any of a pulse to stay "clear" ??

Nope, does nothing without oxygen. Infact if you are active you just pass out quicker.

If this crash is what engineers believe it is a rare. The plane was flying through a severe storm and may have been hit by lightning. Yet all planes must be able to stand a lightning impact, but is never guarenteed to survive it without any damage. One Dutch spokesman of a famous airliner company also mentioned, that if a lightning strike hits a plane and all electronics fall out, the plane is still be able to fly when engines are on.

So it is a mystery as of why it has crashed.

It may not even be related to lightning or windshear. Usually a chain of events need to happen for a plane to crash, the lightning strike might have been the first, losing communication (and thus navaids, as you can use these to communicate if needed) afterwards would certainly be a major problem over the ocean.

If you lose power then the plane can fly - but it's only running basic systems.
