Let us ponder shall we? If you were in a gun battle and it came to a stand off. Then you noticed that your weapon totting enemy's child was in arm reach, would you take the child as a human shield and as a bargaining chip to make him/her lower his/hers weapon. NOTE: neither of you have had any military or police training.

I sense the lack of the term "let's use your imagination for the situation"! |

This is one of those questions where you really don't know the answer unless you are actually faced with the situation.
Think about studies like the Milgram shock experiments. Practically everyone predicts that they would never go all the way with the shocks. Practically everyone predicts that very few other people would go all the way with the shocks, either. Yet, when people are actually placed in the situation, a strong majority of them do go all the way. Another one: Think about the bystander effect. Say you were sitting in a waiting room with 12 other people. From the next room, you hear what sound like screams of panic and then you see smoke coming from under the door. Would you bust open the door and try to help the person in distress? When presented with the scenario, most people say they would help and would help without hesitation, but when actually put in the scenario, people tend to either not help or be very hesitant about helping. The interesting thing is, is that if you are the only one in the room, your prediction tends to be more accurate: You probably would help! Anyways, the point being is that our predictions about human behavior (including our own!) are often much different than what our actual behaviors would be if we found ourselves in the situation. |
