I had a ticket for 39 mph over the limit, reckless endangerment, attempted manslaughter (or something like that), attempted suicide (really, WTF?), failure to yield, and attempted evading police.

I didn't get arrested (though I probably should have). I think what kept me out of cuffs was I was honest with the officer. He saw my radar detector (was going over a blind crest when he tagged me so the radar was useless) and he asked me how they worked. I told him "evidently not very well since we're having this conversation right now."

It still ended up costing me hundreds of dollars and lots of time in court.
Attempted suicide?! What do they do, take away your license and make you attend a driver's education course if you succeed??? [rofl][rofl][rofl]

It's just another charge they can tack onto a docket. That charge ended up getting dropped along with the fleeing charge and the attempted manslaughter or whatever it was.

Default how bad is 1 point on your driving record?
I just got a bogus ticket for "wheel spin" that is 1 point. I can fight it and win but I thought about the hassle and time i'd have to take off from work to attend court.... My wheels spun for half a second because from a stopped position I was over a patch of coarse sand and gravel and my tires slipped and then regained traction. I did not speed, no reckless driving (high acceleration), and the cop slaps me with another ticket for driving an unsafe vehicle telling me I have bald tires... They are low on tread but they are not bald/dangerous.
Is it worth fighting over 1 point? I'm 24 and I drive a 2007 mazdaspeed 3. Is 1 point going to push my insurance rates to insanely high levels? I don't even understand the point system.
I have never received any points/tickets before. I don't drive recklessly or fast.

Youre lucky, 1 point isnt anything. Your insurance rates will stay the same. Ive had numerous speeding tickets in the past year and im on the verge of getting my license suspended. I have about 10 dermit points atm. I should take traffic school but im to lazy.[thumbdown]

Damn thats a bummer. I had a friend who had an older brother that used to race in the streets back in 99-2001. It was really popular in the area back then to race after midnight. He got slapped with so many tickets that his license was suspended... He kept driving anyway but he used my friends (his little brother) license and got 8 points and they all went to his little brothers license... so my friend had a bad record thanks to his bro.

I'm so unfamiliar with receiving a ticket.. I feel so sad... jesus this is pathetic

Good job youve got ABS/TCS if the cops are that strict!! Imagine what you would have got if you had a full blown smoke producing wheelspin!

I was really lucky two nites ago, floored the car from a junction to around 40 in a 30 zone with a unmarked copper behind me in a cloud of smoke

Luckily he only gave me a slapped wrist, keep my clean licence Was sure i was gonna lose it I was driving like a right tool (which I normally don't tbh, used to drive for a living).

Were you in Maryland, Virginia or DC proper?

1 point is really nothing... Getting slapped with 5 points is something to worry about... Like the ticket I got in MD back in 2007.

If you want a clean license and less money in your governments pocket, got to court. Though it could be like up to 4 hours worth of your time.

Me, I might just pay it off. How much is it any ways?

Insurance and points, I wouldn't worry too much. They never find out. My sister has gotten so many tickets, yet her rates have never gone up. My wife has gotten like 3 or 4 in the past 3 or 4 years, and her rates have never gone up. I don't even know how many points she has, but it should be high. All her tickets were for speeding and her highest was going 19 over.
I just got a ticket myself not too long ago. Going 18 over. I knew it was my fault, I saw the cop but for some reason just kept running a long and let him grab me. I called, paid the $167 and that was it. I have no clue how many points I now have, and insurance has no clue.

It seems, the two insurance companies that we use don't check the system ever for unreported tickets. Who reports tickets any ways to your insurance?

Maryland in Montgomery County.
The wheel spin fine is 1 point and 70 dollars
the unsafe vehicle is 60 dollars
also he gave me a yellow slip that orders me to replace my tires.... in 50 days or face an additional fine.

No biggy I'll just get all season radials and keep the current tires for new rims in the future.

I have decided to fight it. Because I did not show ANY sign of aggressive driving and/or reckless driving or speeding. Pretty much a BS ticket and I intend to fight it all the way. It's honestly not even about the points.. It's about the fact that the cop was completely unfair. He was VERY angry too when he came to my window... Speed walked and and said "WHY did you do it? Tell me what was the point of it?" and I was confused. I just froze for a few seconds and said "Officer what did I do?".

Funny thing is there was a blue* GTI on the far right lane (3 lane road and I was on the far left) that easily hit 60mph when the speed limit is 50... I never go past 45 on that road... Too many bumps and cracks on that road...

Don't go in to "fight it."

You'll have to go to court there in Montgomery County... When you do, they'll ask for your plea... Tell them "Not Guilty w/ Explanation," and tell them that IF you did bark your tires, it was not intentional due to the loose material on the surface of the road. You may also point out that your driving record has been absolutely spotless (which he will confirm as you say it on his screen)...

Don't go into the GT or the cop's attitude, etc. If you do, the judge will write you off as coming up with excuses and find you guilty anyways. Also, don't expect the cop to not show up... They work their schedules so that unless there are outside circumstances, they will almost ALWAYS be there for the days when the court's docket has traffic violations. The ONLY chance you MIGHT have is for them to have another cop present for the one who wrote your ticket. BUT, even if that does happen, they will have a written, sworn statement from the cop who wrote it... So it's your word against theirs. And since everything is digital, the cops in MD take quite a bit of detailed notes for every citation they write.

In September I received a ticket up by Baltimore that would have been 5 points... I went ahead to at least plea it down. I went in early on the docket to see how the judge felt that day, and what he was listening to and disregarding. I plead guilty w/ explanation, pointed out that I had lived in WV all of my life until three weeks prior, and while it did not diminish my guilt, I was simply not used to rural roads randomly changing speed limits since everything in WV is 55, which was the exact speed I was going. He wrote me down for 1pt, dropped the cost of the fine so that I would pay the same amount after the associated court costs and called it a day.

Now, something to consider is that even though they may drop the point, they may not drop the fine. So potentially, you could end up paying MORE than your ticket was originally worth. But, as soon as you enter your plea and give your explanation, you are completely at their mercy. Once he has made his decision there is nothing you can do short of getting an attorney to appeal, and 1 pt and a sub-$100 fine are not worth that; because all of it will go on your record, and make things that much worse for you if you ever receive another ticket... since the cop who pulls you over will have that at his fingertips the moment he pulls up your record in his cruiser.

Oh, no problem... I've had a few *ahem* tickets *cough* in my time... As of this weekend, I am back down to only having 4 points against my license! w00t!

Now, something to keep in mind... While the points only last 2 years on your record, insurance companies retain them for 3.

You can get a ticket for wheel spin? LMFAO!
Yup, just like they can nail you for accelerating too quickly, stopping too quickly, changing lanes too frequently... Gotta love the loose legalese on the "aggressive driving" laws! [thumbdown]

$130 total! Hell yeah I would fight that. Even if you wait 8 hours that still amounts to $16/hr that you would save. Plus the amount of money that you would save from not having to get new tires. Even though you would still get new tires soon, just use it in court as that is essentially another $400 plus ticket on top of that for tires.
I would rather go to court then work too. Either you work to pay the ticket, or fight to not pay the ticket.

Go take pictures of where you spun your tires so the judge can see how loose the terrain is. Then go to 3 mechanics to get an estimate on the amount of traction left on your tires. The Cop said that they are bad, but if 3 mechanics can over rule him, I am sure the judge will definitely take that into consideration over what the cop said.

Maybe even have an explanation that your car has traction control standard, and is there to prevent this kind of thing. If you do get wheel spin, the traction control automatically kicks in, so if there is wheel spin, it lasts no longer than 1 second and is no fault of your own as it in unpreventable.

I would feel extremely confidant going in myself and that is a lot of money you would save.

Plus, do you have a manual or automatic? You could even use that on your defence as well. Plus with your clean driving record as well, I think that you totally have enough to go school this cop.
