I think the most informative part of this thread is the fact that North Dakota actually exists and there are a bunch of people there.

Not really, it's the third least populated state, from what I remember.

That's because this room is being used to grow your corn and raise your beef.

Doesn't most beef come from the wonderful state of Texas?

Default Some more updates on the flooding here.
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/200..._flooding.html

Great photojournalism and some scary pictures. I'm in Bismarck right now, and it's pretty hairy, nothing like Fargo, but damn, it's going to be an interesting next couple of days.

it really is depressing that the media doesnt cover whats going on....
Just like the midwest floods of june 2008.... and the the after effects of new orleans hurricane katrina (or karrina as Barb Bush said)...
Are these events not reported because of the government? I don't get it.. I feel that the only reason they even covered New Orleans was because everyone was because everyone had heard/knew about it so they were forced to cover it... Such a large area could not be ignored....
Why do they do this? The media is supposed to inform, help, and empower people... Why do they ignore?
As for the people of Fargo, I hope for the best and hope it ends soon.
Do they ignore to keep people calm and in order?
Confused

Well, part of it (and this is going to sound bad, but I don't care) is that there aren't any poor black folks to make people "feel sorry" for on the national news. Just a bunch of hard working middle class blue collar farmers rallying together to fend off a flood instead of a bunch of people waiting on rooftops demanding to be saved, looters, and criminals. That's a much less interesting story.

You take a flood that displaces 50,000 people and put it in LA, or Detroit, or Chicago and CNN wouldn't shut up about it, but put it in North Dakota and the country couldn't give a damn.

What I do find funny is that Obama has had the entire state declared as a distaster area since Tuesday and even planned a trip out here, but our state government told him to stay put, we didn't want him out here. Putting one sandbag on the dyke infront of a camera isn't going to help anyone, and the roads are already packed with people moving, trucks carrying sand and sand bags, National Guard (that's right, they've called in the National Guard to help) checkpoints and roadblocks, the city couldn't handle the shutdown of The President comming, so they told him they'd rather he stay away. [rofl]

Sorry for the rant, but this is a big deal. The flood level of the river is 17 feet. Today it's expected to crest at close to 45 feet! Thousands of people will lose their homes, thousands of people have been evacuated, thousands of pepole will be homeless, and nobody but the people that are directly effected seem to give a damn. [no]

Wait, clean up, and rebuild. This is the highest in history the river has been. Nobody ever expected it to get this bad, and as a result the dykes aren't built to withstand this amount of water, eventually they're going to fail, and the city (yes the whole city) is going to flood.

Just to remind some people, this is what happened to Grand Forks in 1997 when the river flooded and the dykes broke.

Breann Benedict, government flood housing, Grand Forks ND, 1997

We're not just talking about a little water in your basement here, we're talking about city wide damage that destroys thousands of homes and takes years to recover from.

I don't know if you are trying to be racist or trying to prove that the media is so ****ed up or maybe both?

If there's not a minority for the major news to profit off why would they be there? The bigger the minority presence the more of a news story it is. If New Orleans was filled with affluent middle class white people there wouldn't have been as much of a story.

I guess if thinking like that makes me a racist oh well?

EDIT: Okay, better example. National news branch, there are two identical crimes committed. One by a white person, one by a black person, which do you think have more of a possibility of being a sensational story and attracting the most viewers.

i don't want to start a war over this. and i absolutely am not one but having said that.

racism is in human nature. thats just a part of us. what makes us divide into clans. groups. nations etc. the problem is more of a "human rights" problem once ppl just become delusional enough not to be able to differentiate right from wrong. other then that i find nothing wrong with one wanting to think american is better or greeks are the smartest ppl on the planet n such.
