How is the Recession Affecting You?

So, how is this Global Recession (Mainly USofA) affecting you whether good or bad.

All my investments are locked in at X percent. Had a few hundred in stocks to practice with, so I am not really worried about that money, it isn't a huge loss, but still a small loss.

Currently, it is not affecting me directly. I actually got a job the same month the recession officially hit us. My job security is 100% and still expanding. There is a lot of suckiness about this job, but it is because of the company, not the recession. Like raises, benefits, healthcare, ect. ect. They are a company that does not exceed the laws of the local, state and federal government.

Though, in a couple of months I am headed back to school. Then the recession will hit me. I will have to find a new job which I am sure will be impossible, and once I get out of school, 1 year technical degree, I am not sure if I will be able to get a job with it. Though I can always go back to my old job at that time if need be.
I have a family now, but the Military is still an option if times get hard.

Everyone in my family isn't really affected either. My brother was jobless until even after I had got a job. So that is two jobs in my family that were filled during this recession! His is solid and he is one his way to make $50k a year. Other part of the family has just put some things on hold. Mainly wanting a different job and selling of house. Fine where they are at now, so they are just affected in them changing up their daily life, nothing huge. Oh, they did get hit hard as their investments are mainly stocks, but are still young and still spending the same as they did last year. Actually recently discovered a "lost" account that had more money in it then they thought it had. I haven't heard anything bad from extended family either. Haven't heard from any friends either.
All I have heard is friends being worried about their positions, so are stepping up their A-game to help insure that they stick around.

Spending from everyone seems the same, and for me, spending has drastically gone up now that I have a job, as well as savings.

I am better off than I have been in my life. I struggled as I was way too frugal with my money in my 20's and have learnt by my mistakes. I am earning more and saving more and even managed to get in control of my bipolar and do not need tablets. [thumbup]

Computer hardware is more expensive and I get less interest on my savings. About it really.

Of course it's horrible for those that are affected, but thankfully I don't know anyone that is.

well me dad may lose his job,and If he does I'm gonna have to start helping them out financially cos my mom's retired so there will be Little income.

I don't mind cos' thieve supported me no questions asked, up until I was able to stand on my two feet as a teen.

So I'm proud to help them out.

the only way I'll lose my job is if I get blown up shot at or shot down so all's good.

You struggled because you were too frugal or because you were too free in your spending?

Military?

The recession has slowed down work a little bit at my job. Last year, we had a phenomenal year even though the signs were already there that the economy was having problems. Overtime was pretty much unlimited providing there was stuff to do (which there always was.) At the end of January this year, they cut all overtime (mainly because there were a few people abusing it and totally milking it) but also there's less workload.

Well i lost my job, can't find another one, and am running up insane debts with all the bills i have. So yeah, life's great.

Not much really on me really since I am in the United States Army.

As for my friends and family on not in the service or got out. They are worried about their jobs. and one is having difficulty landing a job.

I'm doing great and I hope it stays that way. I'm up for another promotion/move up since a position has opened. If I get this new position then that would mean I've moved up twice in 1 year... badass!
Pay is considerably higher if I get the position. I will also buy a house if I get the job. Right now there are some areas where 400k houses are going for below 100k.

well I sincerely hope all you guys manage to ride the storm.

Obviously my line of work isn't really affected by recession and what with all the troubles around the world I think I'll still be in a job for some considerable time.

I was gonna come out (of the military) but seeing how crap its gotten I think I'll stay where I am and try to keep my head down [thumbup]

Not really directly. I get paid peanuts at my job so they'd never fire me. But it will be very hard finding an internship this summer and If I stay in my current job I'll probably go crazy.

Hard to say. My industry (recruitment) is at first glace really not the best industry to be in at the moment. Having said that, the business area I manage seems to be pretty much recession-proof as its funded by EU money.

Usogwdkb 08-04-2009 02:30 AM

right now.. working 3rd rotating shift and going down to two at the moment. Very hard getting the machines full with work that needs to be printed.

As to be expected, though.

Kinda stupid though, we need to have people who work with their hands and not place it out to asia. Same goes for the US.

good minds, no hands.. not good.

Lost my full time job 2 months ago and it still hasn't been replaced. Its not like I haven't tried, applied to many places and had 4 interviews now. Problem is, so many people are applying for each job, getting ahead of the crowd isn't easy.
Plus, I have a mortgage to pay, which is on a fixed rate, so the huge interest rate cuts are no help unfortunately. I do have savings to use currently, but they can't last forever. Just have to see how it goes...

hapasaparaz 08-04-2009 05:12 AM

It's not. I've been in school for almost 9 years now (4.5 years of undergrad + 4 years og grad school, almost out hopefully soon though), so I've been used to only making about $22-25k a year and living without the newest toys and what not. I've also struggled through lots of debt (2 knee surgeries in the last 3 years), and am out of it now as of recent, so life is actually better for me now that it has been for a very long time, as I actually have a disposable income for a change, go figure.

Starichok 09-03-2009 02:08 PM

The yen is up and the pound is down so for me I'm earning quite a lot (as an English teacher).
I'm slowly sending money back each month to take advantage and pay back some of my student loan [thumbup]

The biggest way it affects me is I have to always hear about it.

my father in law and 2 brother in laws are all laid off. my wife has had her hours cut at her work..
we were on assistance with health care for my wife due to me being out of work and her being pregnant .. guess what the state just pulled that from us too on Thursday... I cant imagine what the hospital bill is gonna be like when my little one decides to pop into the world with in the next 2 months. hopefully its a mistake and we can get it straighten out... times are very frustrating for my family right now.
