The more stronger ones are used in MRI (I think) machines. Those that you use for brain scanning and stuff.
The majority of MRI scanners use supercooled electromagnets to generate their magnetic fields: expensive but far more compact and a hell of a lot safer than using permanent magnets

These things are extremely strong in magnetic pull. But, fortunately, only across a relatively short range.

Fingers?

EDIT: Oh and they are used in your Hard Drives as well.
I once opened up a HDD, it had 2 broad but slim magnets that were quite powerful but I was able to play around with them without getting hurt at all, even with your finger between them.

on a related note, im recently in receipt of 200 6mm Neodymium NIB Magnet Spheres from dealextreme http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13504

They're a lot stronger than they look, its difficult enough to seperate 2 individual ones

I should have bought more, very good pastime making different puzzles with them, took me a couple of hours just to get them into a perfect cube
