My God, slapped Zodiac on last night on HD-DVD.. and have to say, out of the 75+ HD discs I own, this have now become the thing of Demo Material... serious reference quality. The picture is staggering... ok, it's not mind blowing like Dark Knight and Transformers (as in sheer impact) because there's no special effects but if you want sheer clarity... THIS IS NO.1 BY A MILE.
Seriously go by it...

Just done a search wondering why this is so stunning and found this:

"
'Zodiac' holds the honor of being the first film shot entirely in 1080p high definition with digital Thompson Viper Filmstream cameras -- the same groundbreaking cameras director Michael Mann used to film portions of 'Miami Vice' and 'Collateral.' As such, the 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer included on the HD DVD edition of 'Zodiac: Director's Cut' has been taken straight from its pristine digital source, and the results are nothing less than spectacular.
The strengths of the transfer are not immediately apparent -- Fincher's palette is subdued to say the least and the film is cloaked in drab colors and dark shadows. However, it only takes a few scenes to send your jaw careening to the floor. Detail is extraordinary -- every sheet of paper and every letter of newspaper text is crystal clear. Skin and clothing look incredibly sharp, with textures retaining an eerie realism that makes you feel as if you could reach out and touch anything on the screen. The entire film creates a convincing picture-window effect unlike any other transfer I've seen. To top it all off, contrast is dead on, black levels are perfect, and there isn't a lick of source noise or artifacting to be found.
I did catch a few instances of faint banding, but it didn't detract from the otherwise perfect transfer. Spend some time with 'Zodiac: Director's Cut' and you'll find that it has one of the most remarkable and natural transfers on the market today. Kudos to Paramount and Fincher for delivering such an amazing technical achievement."

I bought the movie a while back when the HD DVD fire sales were going on and it does look fantastic. There are plenty of visual effects going on in the film, they are just so good, most people don't notice them.

Sam here mate, got it for £3.99 when it came out... everything went mental with prices. Have to admit... i mean, Bladerunner Final Cut can now be had for £5 on HD-DVD, that's 4 discs of sheer pleasure... insane.

I thought the cheap HD DVD Final Cut only has that cut alone, mine does which is a shame.

The UK one did mate, the US one is 5 discs... and even when new was cheaper than the 2 disc on this country got. It's a stunning pack, probably the best boxset on HD-DVD/BluRay

Yeah, I have the 5-disc of Bladerunner on Blu-ray because when I was looking at getting the collection they were both the same price and at the time I didn't have a way to playback HD DVDs at 1080p because of the limitations of component of the 360 and on the PS3 I could hear the Dolby TrueHD track which is phenomenal.

Movietyme.com is your friend. They have a section that lists the Blu-rays that will work in the UK, and they are often cheaper too. I got the 5-disc Blade Runner set for a few quid cheaper than the 2-disc UK version back when it came out.

I'm waiting for the Blu-ray release of Zodiac which will be out January 27th, less than two weeks from now!

I've heard that this movie looks amazing so I'm excited to rewatch it. It's not my top David Fincher film, but it's definitely one of his best(i'd say it's my 3rd favorite behind Se7en and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)

Yeah Se7en is in a league of it's own mate, it's in my top 10 greatest films ever, Pitt apart from Kalifornia will never give a better performance... seriously waiting for that one on BlyRay... however Zodiac IS excellent.

Agreed. Se7en is an amazing film and it's in my top 15 or 20 movies for sure. I loved Pitt in Kalifornia too. He was great with Juliette Lewis. But I gotta say, his performance in Benjamin Button rivals the greatness of ANY of his other performances in my opinion.

Yeah haven't seen this yet so... we'll see, hopefully enjoy it.

Just watched SuperMan on HD-DVD, great film BUT the HD has done nothing for the special effects which now look worse than ever... all other none special effects scenes looks fantastic for a 31 year old film... slightly smooth BUT very details and clean... the scenes with ice etc look appalling I have to say. Still great film!

I have the UK version and it's supposedly the best version so far. It uses AVC and is the directors cut. I wasn't expecting much due to it being filmed with Super35 but i was impressed with it.

I'm sure there will be an Ultimate Edition available at some point though but if you love the film, the UK version is region free. I think there is a comparison over at AVS forum of all versions of the film.
I actually got to watch T2 at a screening James Cameron at Siggraph last year. They said it was the Blu-Ray master, but the movie looked like a poorly converted PAL to NTSC DVD. James Cameron was there as part of a tribute to Stan Winston. The projectors were 2 4K Sony projectors creating an 8K image. Everything else they showed on that screen looked great. So, I don't know what they were playing that night, but I would think if James Cameron was going to be there that they would get their act together.

But 1080p is lower resolution than film. I mean, film is like 4K. 1080p isn't that high of a quality really. They call it full HD, but, meh. More like medium HD.

What "film" are you talking about? What's better than 1080p Full HD? [surrender]
