I have seen a few other videos like this (UK, US and now CAN) and I can't believe some of these people are actually in business. However, I have dealt with quite a few other "tech" companies that don't know jack. I guess they think that if they can build a computer, they can go into business and make it big.

I've personally had customers bring in computers that were incorrectly diagnosed at one of the "big name" stores and were charged insane amounts of $$ when the problem wasn't even fixed.

Something like a bad RAM stick is very simple to fix, but may not be very easy to diagnose on-site unless the tech has extra RAM with him or the stick is visibly damaged (not usual in my experience). It may require a trip back to the "shop" for a better diagnosis, but it's definitely a no-no to start rattling off selling a new PC or giving a $$ figure before fully testing it.

Wow...I'm fairly confident that I could've diagnosed bad memory back in 6th grade...

I think they were taking the last guy a little out of context, though. Nevertheless, he was way off the mark.
I'm also glad that the owner appeared on TV to apologize, that at least says something.

I thought the thread was going to be about computer geeks having no life http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/tongue1.gif

What?! you mean people who work in PCWorld no NOTHING about computers and all you want to do is get you money?! Impossible.

On a more serious note it is absolutely dispicable that they would do that.

I doubt it was sincere; he couldn't really say anything else. I wouldn't be surprised if he already knew all about it and behind the scenes condoned it.

Well people are just jealous, they need something to whine about. If it's not the weather or that kids are lazier than before, it will be something else!

I'd say they have something to complain about.

Mmmm my mums friend was saying the other day that she took her laptop into a shop near where she lives and got told she needed a new motherboard, which would cost her £250.
I instaltly knew that was a rip off so i asked her what her PC was doing. Well the second you hear the words "and it's just got this text on screen" you know it's not the motherboard (mostly). I told her i'd just do it... and it turns out it's just a windows repair [no] What a robbing *******...

Yeah thats just plain BS. I work with my bro when i get the chance at his computer repair shop.

We always do very extensive testing on what the problem may be. Running tests of all kinds. We've never jerked any one around on what problems they may be having. Thats why when I watched this it made me pretty angry. Everyones always trying to rob someone one way or the other.

adarmaSen 01-16-2009 03:51 AM

I'd say good luck running memtest86 on a PC with a "Blown" memory stick. Usually a PC will not boot at that point, which is probably why most of those guys thought it was a video/motherboard problem. It should at least give a beep code letting you know it's RAM though.

Laptop parts can and do cost a bomb, as each motherboard will only fit in that given laptop.

You try getting a motherboard for a 2 or 3 year old laptop without suppliers giving you insane figures for new parts.

That said 250 is still excessive.

AndreasLV 01-16-2009 06:48 AM

I know i just ordered a £100 laptop mobo for my aunty. So i was thinking this guy is then charging say £100-150 on top of the price of the mobo cost, which seems steep for labour costs to me but...[surrender] that's me. I still thought it could be legit..albeit expensive but when she told me the problem and i saw the laptop i knew he was a bloody conman.

Plus it turns out he's know for his dodgy ways anyway [rolleyes]
