Most self-serve stations around here don't have the clip on the pumps, so you have to hold it. Of course a good way around that is to fit the gas cap into the handle to hold it.
In Alberta putting a foreign object (aka gas cap) in the handle is illegal and can result in a fine.

Brings up a question. At full-service stations, there is a little clip to hold the lever down so that the pump will pump itself until full. That way, that elite professional of professionals - the gas jockey, can handle many cars at once. Why isn't that little clip present at self-serve stations? Can people not be trusted with a clip?

ForumMasta 11-01-2009 10:31 AM

only a moron would buy that, gas pumps have their own pump lock

what is this?? the 40's??

edit: whats funny is that the little clip that holds the lever is shown on the commercial

Hmm odd must be a Canadian thing. Every station I pump gas at here in California has the little clip, there are a couple different styles used.

Same here in Texas, I assumed it was standard on all modern pumps http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo.../confused1.gif.

Wait, you guys still have full-serve stations?

Some gas stations will take it off so users don't clip it and leave it unattended.

That's odd since it stops automatically when the tank is full anyway. I guess it's something I've always taken for granted.

Something could go wrong. All the pumps I've been to have the clips.

pipojambo 11-02-2009 03:39 AM

Every single fuel pump station I've been to in the UK don't have gas attendants.

There was local to my house back in Manchester that probably did a trial run because they did have workers filling your tank but they stopped it after a while. Probably didn't go well.

I've never pumped my own gas, not once in my life. Here in NJ, it is actually against the law to pump your own. Ironically, we actually have decently low fuel prices compared to the rest of the nation, even with the gas stations having to pay people to pump gas. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/tongue1.gif

Just looked that up, never knew about it! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/excited1.gif

Most pumps here have clips. The odd one doesn't or it's broken or whatever. Also, full service is available in many places but you pay more per litre (2-4 cents usually).http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/unsure1.gif

It's the same in Oregon. I don't live there but I go there often since I live about 45 miles south of the border and Medford Oregon is the closest "big" city. It's annoying because I always feel obligated to tip the attendants, negating the cheaper gas prices.

I think New Jersey has several refineries; that probably keeps the price down.

Yeah... I almost had the police called on me when I was taking a vacation on LBI. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/laugh1.gif

You'd think but we have many refineries here in Cali and the gas prices are among the highest in the nation.

We have more than several, which surely helps. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/laugh1.gif You go to New York state though, between taxes and the higher price for insurance that the stations supposedly pay, you're talking quite a difference in price.
