Default What's the best year and model of Pickup Truck to get?
I've decided I should get a pickup that I can use to haul my **** in for a move. I've heard that the late 80's Chevy/GM trucks are beasts and have been looking at them, but does anyone have an opinion on what else to look at?

Maybe an engine size I should look at, 350/454?

If you can find one, the 88' / 89' Ford F150s with the In-line V6 were absolutely stellar. I dumped mine when the alternator took a ****, the body had a lot of rust. Otherwise the truck ran almost brand new for 250k miles.

Well, what are you exactly looking for, and how will it be used? Looking for 3500 or 2500 models, or just 1500 models?

Honestly, I don't think that you can go wrong with any mid-sized truck. Older you go, larger engines are offered, Inline6's and even a few diesels. Lots of 5L engines from all years. Newer models put done a little more torque then the older engines, but HP is really what changes and it changes big.

If you stay in the 5L range with any truck from the big 3, they are generally the best to get. They are the most reliable, the most popular, and the cheapest to maintain, upgrade, mod, ect. Especially if you stay with an OHV engine.
Ford likes to use SOHC V8 engines.

Personally I would either go for a 5.2L or 5.9L Dodge Ram, or a 5.7L from Chevy.
Fords can be a little iffy. I know that at least the 10th gen and up F-150 has basically recalled all models. There are even a few F-150's out there that mechanics refuse to change spark plugs on because it results in thousands of dollars worth of damage. Plus, the Triton engines have always been weak on paper, and are even weaker on the dyno.

Could try and get something new or even slightly used. Really good time to find some sweet deals. I know a friend who got a 300hp Dodge Ram 2008 new for $17k. Got $10k off sticker price.

If you are going to be towing a lot, make sure to get something a tow package and has a transmission cooler. Or be sure to install one if one isn't already. Really helps save the life of your transmission.

I'm looking at this one right now.

It's got a 350 in it and it's attractively priced. I do need to see the rust first hand before I make a decision.

looks awesome. Plus side is you can destroy your neighborhood if you attach a snow plow.
