My father in law was a chief engi (not sure of official title but the top dog) on those things.. monsters, amazing things.
Also, I think I heard it arriving today :) |
Nice, there is a Vulcan at my local airport (Southend) which is being restored also.
I hope she will end up flying eventually too. Here it is doing a fast taxi run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp6OkcaOfrE http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ies/devil1.gif |
I'm confusedhttp://discussworldissues.com/forums.../confused1.gif. I've never heard of these things before. They kinda look like Delta planes but they are smaller. Their engines look like they are dampened or something to reduce noise and their wing span look like they add a bit of weight and drag so it wouldn't exactly be the fastest thing in the air.
Judging by the smooth design (nice curves) and layout etc it kinda looks like it was invented for spying. Anyways thats my guess just by looking at it. So what is it exactly (besides it being a plane) |

its a V bomber and has sisters namely victor and valiant http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_Bomber its as noisy as fook massive and fast. so your wrong on all accounts |

I take it that another advantage of these would be to fly extremely high where most other aircraft can not reach? |

now the electric lightening could whoop some modern jets though and shes from the same time "60's-70's and thats another piece of british establishment http://www.aeroflight.co.uk/types/uk...ing/859690.jpg mach 2.23 same as the tornados and the eurofighters top speed is mach 2.4 |

I'm pretty sure there is a similar jet to the one in the picture you linked but it can be rocket propelled whilst airborne and can go up to mach 5 speeds. That's pretty darn insane. I wonder what the future of military combat fighters will look like and perform like. |
I saw one of those at the West Malling Air Show back in the late 80s
I was sitting on top of my mate's dad's Sherpa van when it flew over at low altitude. Damn those things where loud. |
They have a Vulcan on show at Cosford which is about 10 miles from where I live. Awesome looking piece of aircraft up close. Only ever dropped one payload in anger on the Falklands. Sent a message to the Argentinians: "The British are comming".

Delta lady is very agile for a large aircraft
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soo4IhXthEg her last flights before the storage and refurb and one for OHP as he mentioned the, lightning - sadly the lightning will never be displayed in the UK , something about the big bulge undernearth being a fuel tank and belly landings turning into fireballs :P The Vulcan is comparable to the B-47 Stratojet , not only in performance but weapons loadout (and actually age wise as well since both first flew within a year or 3 of each other) the other `V` bombers were the older Vickers Valiant , which only lasted 10 years till it was retired (flaws were found ) and the very capable (and my favourite) the Handly Page Victor (bigger , faster and heavier bomb load to the vulcan) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVIHn5GdWhI |

and oddly enough the Vulcan was an engine test bed for that Aircraft. if the TSR2 had made it into service I think it would be a different ball game these days with fighters/interceptors. oh unless your talking about the phantom which was the lightnings replacement, but the lightning was just way too thirsty and had to be retired |
Its was the F-111 which got the TSR2 canned , much to the huge disappointment of australia who has also invested money in it , i have a video of the TSR going supersonic on 1 engine in reheat (out of 2) and leaving a lightning in its tracks - whislt the lightning had BOTH burners lit
it was a lockmark aircraft - the F-104 starfighter , far worse than the lightning but as was said , bribes were the reason it was sold over the lightning - but then again ohp is very right , the lightining has shocking fuel consumption - but since it can beat most aircraft to 50,000 feet , even today , it has to be good for something |
