meh. All it adds from the first iPhone is 3G and GPS. Unfortunately for me, there is no 3G service in my area and I don't care about GPS. It seems the big news is the 2.0 firmware.

If you don't have an iPhone, July 11th will be the perfect time to get one, but for those of us who have one already, I don't see any reason to upgrade unless of course you have 3G service in your area. Until then, I will have to stick with what I have.

I was really hoping the firmware would be released today along with the apps store. Looks like we will be waiting until early July. Some of the shots of the 3D games on the iPhone look very good. I was shocked at what it could display. Here's hoping that they run as well as they look.

Some things I look forward to using with the new firmware:

Editing of Word and Excel documents
Powerpoint viewing
Mass delete of emails (duh, duh, duh!!! Why this wasn't in every firmware is beyond me)
MobileMe

What I wish they would have added:

Picture messaging. WTF is up with this? When someone sends me a picture message, I have to go to a website and type in a user id and password to view the pic. It's in a flash Window, so I can't even do it on the iPhone. I have to go to a PC. I'd like to be able to send pics as well. All I can do right now is e-mail them. That's great for friends with smartphones, but for the other 99% I can't send them picture messages.

Who cares about Outlook and Exchange. What about Groupwise and thunderbird? Blackberries have support for many more applications. C'mon apple, it's time to play catch up with features. You have better hardware, now use it!

I agree, it's not a substantial upgrade over the last iPhone but for those who were on the fence I think it may swing them.

I went with an N95 last year over the iPhone as it was cheaper, available on my existing contract and had GPS which was key to me as I just began to drive and have a terrible sense of direction. Now a year on the new iPhone has all the above, a far superior interface, hardware along with a decent price. I'm just waiting to see whether O2 offer any contract below £35 / 18 months, as that would probably still keep it out of my price range.

Plus I killed my iPod while on holiday a couple of weeks ago, so this seems like it could be the prefect excuse / time to get an iPhone

Supermonkeyball looks ace, I love what one person covering the event said though: That will be $9.99 ... translates roughly to £9.99 for the brits >_> Sad cause it's true.

I honestly cant wait for the 3G iphone. I currently have the 4GB version, and I would absolutely love the storage space of 16GB at my fingertips. The GPS is awesome, since I find myself in other people's vehicles, and it'd be nice for turn by turn direction (I have a built in GPS in my Ford Edge, so I wouldn't need one there). Since there is 3G in the area, I'll greatly benefit from the faster speeds, and it'd be awesome once the iphone officially supports flash. All in all July 11th can't come here soon enough [thumbup]

If there is no improved camera, then it's a no go for me. I'd rather stick with my touch and aging K800i.

Yes, it's much cheaper and yes, the new model has 3G, but I was hoping for more improvements to be honest.

And why is the new iphone release a top story on the BBC news site? It's just a phone...

Yeah, the headphone jack is now flush. Otherwise, here's a list of stuff that's people were expecting, or at least hoping for, but didn't get in the new model:

A 32GB model
A better camera
More RAM
MMS
A2DP Bluetooth for stereo streaming
A camera on the front for videoconferencing
Video capabilities
Turn-by-turn navigation (will come with a 3rd party app, I'm sure)
The ability to copy and paste Those are two quite big let downs for me, but oh well. Not having more RAM is interesting, does the original iPhone suffer due to a low amount or something? I imagine their logic was that they want any apps written for one iPhone to work just as well on the other, adding more RAM to the new iPhone would essentially lock the original owners out of any apps developed with the extra RAM utilised.

At $200 I'm just worried about the chaos of getting one on July 11? [surrender]

Will i be able to take my o2 sim card out of my n95 8gb, get rid of this terribly slow, awful phone and get a snazzy Iphone 3g?

it's really funny how this forum is against Apple, the increase in battery life (which still is one of the most important values for a phone), gets ignored just as the success numbers (getting people to use 10 features, that means they got the holy grail of user interfaces for phones)

The only thing the iPhone is lacking now is a decent camera (for me), but tbh I can live without it since it is enough for quick snaps. If I am doing anything special, I would take a proper camera anyway.

Plus the exchange support will be great for work (no more having to setup IMAP access in Exchange).

But the real decider for me will be whether I can buy one and unlock it or get it on a sub £25 contract.

£25 contract is about what I'm hoping for too PM, but I doubt it will happen without one hell of a catch. I can see them doing it, but not including the unlimited data which exists on the current iPhone tarrifs, which would basically mean if you tried to use anything besides the phone / sms / ipod you would get charged a fortune in data usage,

I hope I'm wrong, I hope O2 do a £20 / £25 contract (currently on Online 50 which is £20 / 12 months) with unlimited data even if they include bugger all texts / minutes.

Honestly, just buy a slim digicam for taking pictures. Even the best phone cameras pale in comparison to a good camera. That shouldn't be your sole decision for not buying such an amazing device.

The iphone is the most fluid phone I've ever used, so I don't think more RAM is really an issue.

I think most people who disregard the iphone as a crappy product have either never used one, or never used one long enough. Every single person that I know that has an iphone absolutely loves it. I honestly could never go back to a Windows Mobile or Palm based OS ever again. The iphone's interface is simply magic.

I have a samsung d900 on O2 £35/month 18 month contract.

They have been calling/pestering me daily (I honestly dont answer their call as they always call me whilst I am running my clinic) to discuss my contract, which by the way is about to complete mid July.

I'm getting a bit suspicious that they might be trying to flog me a version 1 iPhone.
As I have told them in the past that I might be interested in getting one at some point.

Anyone know what I'm entitled to when I complete my 18 month contract.
Do they do free or discounted upgrades anymore?

Considering my current 18 month £35/month contract is nearing completeion, how much do you reckon I can get a 3G New iPhone for?

Although I will buy one, Apple should have included a front-facing camera that could be used with iChat videoconferencing. In my opinion, that would have turned this from a great product to an utterly amazing one.

Knowing Apple, this is a feature that was held back simply so that it could be a selling point for iPhone 3.0 (...)

I would of got one if it had been smaller. Still too big for me.

You have to laugh at the overly excited apple crowd wooping, clapping and cheering at every feature at the launch. Flush head phone jack got them really excited

Am I the only person that noticed this...
http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/wwdc...wdclive108.jpg

Somehow Apple not only released a new iPhone, but also managed to run the touchscreen version of Windows Mobile on a Samsung Blackjack which doesn't have a touch screen. The actual task manager (which they're making fun of) is much simpler than the one they showed.

Now all they have to do is launch the iphone in Australia... [rolleyes]

Considering it finally has 3G to bring it to Aussie standards and GPS navigation device. This phone will be hot here.

I'm impressed with the 2.0 software! http://www.apple.com/iphone/enterprise/
