Neeyik, thanks a heap - you stopped my head hurting. I couldn't figure out how the hole released the energy, but it's released from just outside.

I remember reading many years ago about extremely small (atomic level?) black holes and that they 'evaporate' over time, would the Hawkins radiation explain this?

Yep, the evaporation rate is dependent on mass - so black holes created in the early stages of the universe would be small enough to ensure that their "life span" is less than the current age of the universe (I think it's in the order of a few billion years or something like that). I believe a satellite is due to be launched either this year or next which will be used to look for the specific "last moments" of early-universe black holes, amongst other things.
