Default N95 accelerometer fun!
The N95 has an accelerometer which is apparently quite good, but so far there are no real applications of demos to make use of it. Nokia does have a sample application, nothing elaborate or amazing but you get the idea:

There are some third party apps coming out that will make use of them; Rotateme 2.0 and Nokmote (http://www.bysamir.fr/). Check out the link for video examples of the apps!

Rolling a ball around a screen is fun? lol.

They have this sort of thing on the Nokia 5500 sport, you could roll the ball through a
puzzle maze and connect via bluetooth for 2 player.

The accelerometer is to protect the HDD (in the 8GB) during a drop.

Why would they want to go HDD based over flash based?

How would that work? Just once it senses a certain level, it spins down and parks the heads or something?

8GB version is flash based...
That's why they had to remove/replace microSD slot for addional flash chip(s).

Hmm, I'd like to see inside because I'm not really sure how they'd find the room in there for 8GB of solid state memory. Flash memory still can't give you the same density as HDD.

When I was working on the N91, the phone was probably Nokia's first with an accelerometer in order to protect the HDD in exactly the way zortoflaven describes. When the phone detected rapid acceleration, as in a fall, it would do an emergency park of the HDD's heads.

If the N95 doesn't use an HDD, or at least wasn't ever intended to, then there's not much use for an accelerometer. Perhaps it's there to switch the orientation of the screen depending on how the phone is handled, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't do that either.

2*4GB or 4*2GB chips inside (not sure which it was). Phone is pretty much same size than normal model.
microSD slot and cameras lens cover been removed from it. Could be also reason why it took a while get whole phone out.

Current software on N95 8GB doesn't have auto orientation turn, but wouldn't be surprised if that would be added to normal N95 and 8GB model with software updates.
Makes wonder why accelerometer was added in first place. They gonna have had some plans for it.

the nokia N95 uses micro Sd cards, and the nokia N95 8Gb version uses Micro SdHc cards. (see here)
Micro Sd is upto 2Gb, and Micro SdHc are upto 8Gb (atm)
Normal N95 supports SDHC cards just fine. Should be support all the way up to 32GB
N95 8GB's memory is internal without memory card slot.

With SDHC memory card it's already possible to get N95 8GB... well, kinda
If difference would be just memory size.

It doesn't need to spin down, just needs to park the heads.
