Just get a PS3.

I see Blu-Ray eventually winning (or if it doesnt, we'll see all titles on both platforms).

For BluRay, PS3 as it is the cheapest BluRay player and is supposed to be extremely good. Soon it will be $400 so makes it all the better.

For HD-DVD, I would say x360 if you have the right combo if you are not wanting to spend too much.

$350 (x360) + $170 (add-on) = $520 or $440 with the no-HDD x360
or
$300~$400 for a good HD-DVD player

Going for the console gives you quality just like the players and gives you much much more. If it were me, I would go for the PS3 and BluRay.

Yeah it's a PS3 for one simple reason. 85% of PS3 purchasers do not buy it for watching Blu-Ray! So you've covered your bases. If Blu-Ray dies you can still easily off load your player to someone who wants it for other reasons.

Toshiba HE-E1 HD DVD player for £180. Would be cheaper than Xbox 360 + HD DVD Drive.

There is also a mail-in offer to get 5 free HD DVDs.

Really I'd look around at the releases, both released and upcoming, on both formats before deciding. I wouldn't try to guess who is going to win this format war, as there have been so many twists and turns along the way I think it really is out of the analysts hands.

Besides, if one format does die, its not like your movies will stop working! You'll always have them to fall back on (or until they get released on the winning format)

There some good logic there. If blu-ray dies then you can get rid of the PS3 as a games machine... just that you might be left with a library of useless blu-ray movies.

That's what Netflix is for.

LG do one aswell, however its pretty pricey.

http://www.richersounds.co.uk/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=LG-BH100

It upscales normal DVD's whilst also playing Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

I'd get a 40GB PS3 (just wait for it a bit) for BD.

For HD-DVD there are some real deals out there. 1080i output, 5 free HD-DVDs $170,free ship

http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-HD-A2-...2895400&sr=1-1

1080p for $220

http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-HD-A20...2895400&sr=1-2

Look at the lists of the movies if you can only get one. HD-DVD hardware is definitely cheaper, but they have to have the movies you want.

If I was new to HD and not a gamer....I'd get the Tosh A20 1080p HD-DVD player.

If I liked game a fair amount....40GB PS3.

Basically with one or the other you WILL be missing titles. Neither is going anywhere anytime soon. Paramount was a huge deal, as they along with Universal have some of my fave movies. Then again for BD side...Sony is giant and Disney is a must, esp with kids...or even not, Pixar.

That probably helps you none, except to wait or get ready to spend some $$$

If you are not going to game on the 360 I wouldn't recommend one as a Hd-dvd player because of the poor reliability of the system. Some fantastic deals on the Toshiba drives!
