Default 27 Environmentally Friendly Cities to Live
http://www.private-communities.org/p...ities_to_live/

Extremely interesting. A lot of good things being done. Wish more was being done much faster though.

What surprised the hell out of me was that Chattanooga of all places was on this list!!! Good news for the 4 Onions including me who live here in Chattanooga. [thumbup]

That looks like a fluff piece. I've just come back from Copenhagen where over 40% of people bike to work and the main streets are completely car free- now that's impressive.

the city burns 500,000 tons of trash each year to limit how much accumulates in landfills. That's interesting. I wasn't aware that burning trash was an environmentally friendly alternative to putting it in a landfill.

Landfills look alot nicer than smokestacks and not to mention they can use the methane that develops in a landfill

So i don't think it is...

Glad to see ATX on that list, although we still have ridiculous amounts of trucks and suv's on the road with only a single occupant.

Very true.

The most environmentally friendly city in the US would probably not even make the list of top 500 environmentally friendly cities across the globe! [surrender]

Note: this is merely a figure of speech.. and if you took it as gospel you certainly have been breathing in too much Co2 in your un-environmentally friendly city!

agreed, biodegradable can produce methane. however if you just dump everything in the trash, it ain't gonna be good neither. newer smokestack can double as heat generator, so it really depend on the "quality" of the trash; recycling and seperation of trash is important to allow the use of the best disposition method.

if you don't do that, you will be screwed whether you burn or dump... [thumbdown]

Lets be honest, environmentally friendly by US standards is not really very friendly at all is it. [rofl]
ehmm....

I know that there are some plants that remove all recyclables from the trash, and then turn the trash into ethanol to use as electricity. It was pretty cool and maybe this plant does something a long those lines.

That isn't in America silly. As we all know, America is way behind in times of anything environment.

Behind who?

How about India, China, Korea, Mexico, and South America?

No, you guys are wrong. And no Mr Michigan, it's not a joke.

I never said it was the most environmentally friendly country at its current state, nor the cleanest! I said it was a leader in the initiative towards ecological rehabilitation.

It IS becoming one of the most pro-active ecologically economic countries participating in an effort to reduce it's environmental footprint. You don't have to be the cleanest country in the world to be the most active in environmental initiatives.. and in actual fact, the whole reason China is making such an erroft is becuase they understand they cannot contunue to produce as much waste as they do.

Interestingly enough, out of the 1.3 billion residents, each of those have a much smaller ecological footprint than your average inhabitants in other countries. It is the industry that is causing so many problems, but the problem is China faces huge worldwide export demand.

To help combat this, China has undertaken some of the world's largest ecological rehabilitation projects including the forest protection program, the great green wall initiative and the sloping land conversion. They have also developed agricultural eco-industrial parks to help neutralise their infamous indtursty environmental crisis. They are a long way off, yes, but they are putting in a leading effort.

Read the facts and keep in touch with the news and current events before insulting others... and don't be so one-eyed.

Mind you, how long they plan to live up to their word is another thing. The country has such a bad track record it's will be amazing if they pull any of it off... and the key motivating factor is of course other countries refusing to trade with them unless they clean up their act. But having an industrial culture so used to mis-treating the environment on a large scale level (including lakes that are so polluted they spontaneously combust!), encouraging the smaller, less global industries is going to be a bigger effort.

P.S. My girlfriend was born, and lived half of her life in Shanghai so I am wel aware of its current ecological state.
