Students worried by cows rescued

A full-scale rescue operation was launched after seven college students on a night-time orienteering trek became worried by a herd of cows.

Emergency services were called out on Monday night after the teenagers became stuck on a hill near Swanage, Dorset.

The girls from St Albans had been tasked with using map reading skills to find their way to the nearby adventure centre they were staying in. A Loreto College spokeswoman said the task was run by an "experienced team".

Lots of kids these days probably don't even know what a cow looks like.

Admittedly some of them were a bit cheesy :p

rushiddink 11-07-2007 10:46 PM

OK, it was a funny story.

But its pretty clear to me that none of you have ever really spent any time around cows.

They arent as innocent and peaceful as they look on TV.

Horses also are clearly planning something big and should not be trusted.

I can tell you that I have spent a fair amount of time around cattle and I have to say that cows are nothing to worry about. It's only the bulls that you have to really worry about and I think this paragraph at the end of the report sums it up quite nicely.

"No-one was injured but one teenager who complained of feeling cold was taken to hospital to be checked over by medical staff."

Although I guess they can look quite intimidating.

A herd of cows can be very dangerous, especially when they started walking towards you menacingly. I remember a night map reading exercise when i was in the reserve, L86a2 Assault rifle, grenades, full loaded webbing and 50kg rucksack and walking across a cow field with a herd of cows and have them start walking towards meand giving me evil looks, i didn't half leg it and throw myself over the barbwire fence.
