Default Why do I try new things?
I usually drink beer and whisk(e)y. I generally like most of everything in those categories, and what I don't like I can tolerate enough to drink without a problem. However, recently I decided to broaden my horizons and try wine. I searched Bevmo for the highest rated wines in the $10-$20 range, and picked a couple out. One was Mason Sauvignon Blanc '05, and the other was Michael Pozzan Merlot Special Reserve '05. I started off with the Merlot with my steak. It made me cringe; I felt physically ill. Could not even drink it. I tried, and I felt like I was going to throw up.

So, I decided to give it another shot and opened up the Sauvignon Blanc; same thing. I could not taste past that winy flavor. Although this wasn't as bad as the Merlot, I still couldn't drink it. I don't understand it. I drink whiskies and beers that make most people cringe, but can't take a little wine.

Personal taste - It'd be a pretty boring world if everyone liked the same stuff. Try going for some slightly sweeter wins to start off with and see if they're any better.

I have a friend who likes sweet wines; I might give it a chance next time I go over to her place.

wines really are very hit and miss, even something like a bad cork can make a bottle taste absolutely terrible. at the same time, wine, like beer is quite often an acquired taste, it takes some time before you can really start to enjoy it. for me i was never a fan of red wine and even white wine was to, as you said, winey, for me. but as a culinary student who has had to take entire courses on wine i figured i best start liking it. so i started drinking dessert wines. these are those sweeter wines, that cost a little more but have a much higher sugar content, generally you can find them in smaller bottles because you are meant to only drink small amounts of them. look around for a few dessert or ice wines (my personal favorite) and im sure you can probably fine some that you fancy. beyond that, white wines are the next tamest wine, try a few white zifandels or pinot grigios, both are my personal favorites. then if you are feeling dangerous go for a glass of red, i personally enjoy cabernet sauvignons, zifandels, or pinot noir, all have great flavor. (personally i stay away from Merlot...ive never really like the flavor)if you are looking for cheap wine i recommend Ravenswood or Fetzer, both under $15. Im not sure where you are from but if you can find them they are both real cheap and still quite good. give them all a chance and sooner or later you will probably start to enjoy them. [thumbup]

if you spent a bit more then i doubt that it was a bad quality wine, although as said something like a bad cork can make the wine taste bad

personally i enjoy a good wine msyelf but red not white, not something i drink often as its more for meals and things. however its good if your partner enjoys it as well, as it means you can enjoy a nice glass of wine in an evening

The Lushman loves himself a delicious beer. None of the low-brow pee-water for me, though!
