I'm thinking about getting a 1996 Saab 900 to replace my Jeep Cherokee so I can have a car to do interstate driving and stuff for college. I found one for the right price, but I would have to have it shipped. So, I'm just seeing if anyone has one, or has had one, just to get some comments on the car, Thanks. BTW, it's a 2.3 liter 4 banger, non-turbo. It is supposed to get 25ish combined mpg. Better than my Jeeps 16-17.

I have some Volvos, they are more straight forward than Saabs. Saabs are fun though! Like most older European cars though, it should last and drive forever... just plan on quirks... lots of quirks. If I were you, I would look a few years older, when it was more Saab and less GM though. Just a thought. I have a 1990 900 SPG Turbo that I love, yet I only drive it on occasion. It just needs a nice paint job and a headliner. |

My brother got a 1997 Saab 900, and my dad got a 1998 Saab 9-5...well, my dad's car sucks!! He got that 2.0l "soft turbo" engine, and he's had a LOT of problems with the car allready! Mostly electronic stuff getting wrong...my bro's 1997 "old" 900 model is far better!! Just some little stuff there, like some noisy little fan for the automatic A/C, which was a 5 minute repair...so if I were you I'd go for the 1996 one as well!! Don't get a newer "900-II", they aren't that good any more (too much GM influence)...

More like a rebadged Opel, the Saab 93 has the frame from a Vectra, and the 9-5 has an Opel Omega frame, if I remember correctly. The diesel engines in the 93 are also made by Opel, but the gasoline ones are Saab's own. The 9-5 has a 2.2TiD made by Opel and a 3.0V6 made by GM. |

Real old Saab versus Jetta
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...saab+96+racing Edit: I spent my early life in that wagon, well not this one but the same model. ![]() Obviously highly modified, but I can not tell you how many times I came up on cars that should of smoked me in a race, but I came out ahead in my teens. I grew up on Saabs. They are the original sleeper car with history. |
