I phoned O2 and there going to send me out a 3G sim for my contract, i'm just wondering now though - will this work with normal 2G phones aswell?

I doubt it will, because as far as I know, 3G technology works on a totally different band to 2G.

WTF?!
Here in Portugal, having 3G relies exclusively on the phone's ability to it (aka hardware).
Never heard of 3G sim cards / GSM sim cards.
Anyway, the 3G sim card will probably work on a non-3G phone, except it'll work as a standard GSM card (with GSM communication speed).

Exactly. You can check if you're on 3G... Your mobile phone, provided it is configured to pick up 3G, will probably display a 3G icon on the status bar. If not, check your network status and/or settings.
If you're on 3G, type the number and hit the according key for "video calling". Your plan also must feature this type of communication.

Well i now mines deffenatly a gsm one as it said on the sim card holder and it didn't pick up a 3G signal at all even though my areas covered.. It might just be O2 thats like this though.

Guess i'll need to wait and see if it works when it comes, hopefully it does cause a lot of the 2G phones are better than the 3G ones

Yes, the 3G SIM (i.e. USIM) should be backwards compatible.
