The surcharge is not for CO2 emissions, but for driving a diesel. I think it's a 4% addition to the benefit in kind tax.

Currently I pay 40% tax on 13% (this number varies depending on emissions) of the value of the car per month.
The diesel surcharge is 3%.

You should be paying at least 15% on a 320d by now - 2012-2013 tax year. Next year it will be 16%.

No, it says a ****** has arrived, and they're usually wearing an entire tub of hair gel. Especially true of white Audis I find.

Does that sound like the sort of thing that would bother me lol.

As stupid as it is, the Audi would be a better carpark statement. It's sad that stuff like that still makes a difference with clients, but it does. An Audi says the decision maker has arrived, a VW says his PA has come along.
... I drive a VW. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/biggrin1.gif

You're right, it's gone up again. Yay. I hadn't noticed as my annual review tends to coincide with the new tax year.

Yes, that is the typical reaction of someone who can't afford an Audi.

Base model A3/A4 drivers tend to be in their 20's and in sales so can be tossers. To assume everyone that drives an Audi is a ******* says a lot of bad things about you.

Now now, that's what a ****** would say. Audis aren't really that expensive anyway.

Exactly... like the BWM 3 series - 316 and 318s of the late 90s were almost as common as a Ford Escort. You have to admit though, for young blokes, driving an Audi A4 or S3, is akin to walking down the street with your c0ck hanging out.

Just to be clear - I drive a 520d M Sport

Because I actually said that and was being 100% serious, right? My last car was an Audi. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/biggrin1.gif

Anyway, I clearly said white Audis. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/wink1.gif

There is a clear breakdown of communication here. I thought you'd take my comments in good humour.

Have you got the latest model 5-series? I could get one but there are a couple of things that concern me...

1) If I get the 520d M-sport auto (I want an auto) then I'll have to forgo electric seats and tinted glass to keep in budget.
2) I'm not sure if I want to bump up to a car that big. I don't really need it and it will just be a pain to park more of the time.

Leasing costs are about the same as a Ford as they have so much better residuals.

It's nothing like it! I have never been arrested for driving down the street.

That's odd, because I've never been arrested for having my c0ck hanging out!

As an aside - what % of your gross income do you think is reasonable to spend on a car?

I think people have a odd view of what they can 'afford' - I know leasing is different.

Depends how much you earn and how many family members you have to support.

Hypothetically,I'd allow up to 20% in my current circumstances. However, if I didn't get a company car I'd be rolling around in a 25 year old Fiat.

My car is a perk, not part of my basic package, so £160 to have a roughly £40,000 car on the drive and no servicing / insurance costs is a bit of a non-brainer.

I'd say the same, or even less but I think a lot of people spend way more than that.

My rule of thumb is never purchase a new car for more than your yearly salary after taxes.

When I was mid 20's loads of my mates lived at home and had a top of the range car on the drive. I'd rather have my own place and not worry about filling up every twenty miles.

I didn't read it that way, but sorry if I really got it wrong.

Yep, latest model.

I'd much rather have the Sport Auto box than the electric seats. Tinted glass is helpful with kids, although I don't think it actually makes the sun that much dimmer. I'd probably spec built-in blinds next time.

I decided against the Auto, as good as it is, and went for Xenons and Business speaker system instead (the standard lights are crap, so I'm told). I've never had an Auto, so don't miss it or wish I'd specced it.

You do get used to the size. Parking can be a pain in some spaces, expecially shorter ones, but sensors are standard front and back. It doesn't feel that heavy to drive either - it's actually feels pretty light footed. I was planning on a new 3 series, but they weren't out yet and I was looking to save on tax and fuel costs as soon as possible. Yes, it's big, probably bigger than I need, and I'd probably get a 3 next time, but it is a beautiful car and way more comfortable than a 3 to sit in and drive.

An Audi says the decision maker has arrived, a VW says his PA has come along. Halfway through that sentence, my mind automatically started reading it in Alan Partridge's voice....
