Default Best and Worst Jobs of 2011
Quite clearly Optometrists ($96,000) and Librarians ($54,000) are getting over-paid for what they actually have to do.

I'm surprised that biologist is so high. Also, physicist edged out financial planner, which seems to be the closest to what KH does now (unless you consider statistician). Also, philosopher at 16 might cause some pause. Smut peddler must fall somewhere in the middle.

The list: http://online.wsj.com/public/resourc..._20110105.html

Software Engineer is #1 of course.
Actuary is wayyyy down the list at #3.
Yeah, but that's just because Software engineering has 10 more hiring outlook (which I don't need to worry about) and 6 fewer stress (I don't find my job stressful). But I have 1.03 fewer physical demands than you and twenty-nine better work environment.

Financial planners are people who give investment advice to the retail public.

Clearly this is a case of "too much of a good thing is a bad thing". A quick look at the methodology makes it clear why a very low score is actually along the lines of Asher's description:

The necessary energy component 0-5 While not requiring a lot of energy is a good thing, low energy is highly correlated to depression

Physical demands 0-12 While nice to be able to rest sometimes, no physical activity whatsoever also leads to and/or is a result of depression

Work conditions (toxic fumes, noise, etc.) 0-13 Certainly toxic fumes are bad, but by eliminating all noise or other physical inputs you get sensory deprivation torture.

Physical environment extremes treated as negative scores 0-10 Blandness taken to extremes.

Stamina required 0-5 This is where the formula breaks down the most. In this case stamina is actually "required" to be low. The more vitality someone has, the worse the experience will be. They'll go stir crazy. Cabin fever... Only those with no will for life left in them can survive.

Degree of confinement 0-5 The lack of physical inputs leads to the perception of vastness regardless of actual physical constraints (see torture)

Physical demands are bad? Stress gets a bad rap too. Without it I'd get nothing done.
