Hah.

Before I even got my CCW permit, I got pulled about three times. Every time just told the cop I had a gun under the seat or in the bag and a shotgun in the trunk. They'd just ask what kind and issue me a warning for a tail light out or failure to yield and I'd be on my way. Have not once had to take them out.

why would you? they don't have a right to see them

I said something similar to a friend at work... WI will soon be getting concealed carry passed and being from michigan, i cant wait to have it back. he asked me what i was afraid of.. i said what do i have to be afraid of? I have a gun.

he thought it was slightly humorous... lol

I know they don't. But at the time I was not licensed to carry, and while in the state of GA a license isn't necessary to keep a firearm in my car....there is no proof per say that it is mine and/or I've obtained that firearm legally unless they were to run the serials. So just from looking at it from that aspect it seemed fuzzy to me.

For reference; I've only owned a firearm for ~7-8 (maybe 9?) months now. Not stating I am ignorant of my rights or the laws. Just that I had some assumptions about how such situations would have gone down.

that's where it gets tricky. politely telling them to screw off after they ask and lie saying how they have to when they dont. Luckily i havent had to do that yet either

It's a perfectly sensible thing to let the cops know there were weapons in the car as it just needs one to over-react on spotting a firearm and it could get messy.

telling them about it when its irrelevant can cause them to over-react

That was the idea.
Don't jump out yelling "I've got a gun", just tell them if you're asked or if they're likely to see it or come across it. For example, if you've a weapon in the glovebox with your documentation, let them know, rather than them see it as you open the 'box.

They're just ordinary guys doing an aften dangerous and stressful job, why not make things easy all round.

Yea was my intention as Gordo described. And wiz also is right some cops can just flat out over-react. You just never know. With all the meth heads in my area the cops have it tough enough. I'm the kind of person you will see that when pulled over will take their keys out of the ignition, stick my hands out the window with keys in hand and put them on the roof. Then leave my hands hanging out the window. And I let them know I have a firearm. While others may mock me for this routine. Making them feel safe has worked for me so far. But again now that I am licensed I don't imagine having any issues now.

lol iceman, neither!

i have many friends in law enforcement and if pulled over everyone of them will tell that you should let them know. if not you stand a good chance of going to jail if they happen to run across or see a fire arm. they could care less if you have one they just want to know for their own safety..
lol, go to jail for what? doesn't surprise me that that is what they would say

that's different and would be wise. if i have one properly stored in accordance with state laws, i'm not telling them. in some states (Michigan for example) If you have a permit, and are carrying a gun, you are required by law to disclose that information.

(this is for being pulled over from a moving violation, since in that situation they have no grounds to search a vehicle. IF they had reasonable suspicion to search my vehicle without my consent/against my wishes, i would give them a heads up but i dont see that happening)

basically it comes down to never giving them any more information than necessary, because they are all fishing for something else to hit you with anyway.
