Default Reading Greens
Do you know how to read greens? I'm talking about more than just looking at the slopes. I'm talking about reading the grain of the green. Pitch of the green. The green complex as a whole. Determining outside natural land or water masses.
Do you feel that being able to read greens will help with your putting? Have you sought advise on how to read greens?
I feel that if your going to get fit for clubs, look the part, you might as well know how to play. Reading greens can help lower your score and can the difference between a good score and a great score.

At my home course I can but somewhere else I have a hard time since I don't know weather the greens run fast or run true at least I don't figure them out until the 3rd hole I am very comfortable with my putter for this whole month even though I did play 3 different courses this past month

Looking at the complex of the green is pretty much all youll ever need.

I know the greens well at my home course as I caddie there (although I still miss quite a few - if I could read every putt perfectly I'd be on tour). I've actually taken the time to learn each green in quadrants where I work - I broke each green down and went from there. I've also picked up a bunch of little tips along the way that help me read putts - I actually always look at the players shoes when they're in a stance. It sounds silly but it gives me the read on the beginning portion of the putt.

I can do basic reading but not in the detail you stated (grain, pitch, natural tendencies to water, etc). I have no doubt that I would be a better golfer in general if I was a better reader of greens. Being partially color blind (greens/browns, etc) definitely does not help my cause!!

I can read grain and slope, still learning the rest. It's a long process and I get a little better every time I play.

I have had several play lessons and my coach has really worked with me on this. I have a much better understanding than I did a year ago but I still get confused on some of the tougher greens. If I am alone, I take a lot of time to study the greens and can do a much better job figuring it out. However, when I'm playing with others I feel more rushed and don't take the time I need to take sometimes. I'm hoping this will get easier in time.

I can read greens in my own way, it works for me. I'm sure if I could do it properly I would be even better on the greens. But I guess that's why I'm not making the big bucks. I guess it is one of those things that come with time.

I keep it as simple as possible. Speed and direction. I would welcome more understanding on grain, not as much of a factor up here as down south though.

I'm not too concerned with grain or any of that more complicated stuff. I pretty much just pick a line and try to hit it the right speed.
Thinking about everything else would just confuse me too much, and I feel like I wouldn't putt much better anyway.

Some days I can, other days I can't read a putt to save my life.

I think I might understand how to read grain and all that but slope/water/over all complex of the green I try and figure in. When I walk up to the green I try to take in as much info as I can especially when playing others. From there I might walk around the ball to check out the horizontal or landscape of my putt, but I rarely if ever walk to the opposite side of the hole to read a putt. I also try and take note of how squishy or soft they are when I walk on it...

As far as grain, does shiny mean WITH the grain and dull or dark mean against?

In my mind I do. I know about looking at the different shades of green. Where the green is running by looking at the sun location. In my mind I can read pretty well.look what happened for me thinking.lol

I like to think I can, but compared to what the Pros do, I'm not even close.

Can read the slope, break and if it's going to be fast or slow, but as far as grain of grass, etc, etc, not at all. Would love to be able to though.

There are certainly things that I've had and still have problems with, but I have to say that reading greens has never been one of them.

Sure, from time to time I mess up a putt because I didn't get a good read, but that's rare. As many things as there are to do wrong in this game, everybody can do at least one thing very well no matter how good or bad a player they are and in my case, reading greens is my "good thing".

Whoa. I think I was the only one...

However, I have started getting a little better at it. I now try to take in more as I approach the green even if I'm not actually on the green. And as you said, Tadashi70, I'm even trying to see the grain and sense the feel of the greens under my feet. I, however, do not have sensors in my hands yet, like Ben Crane does.

This is far and away the weakest area of my game and coincidentally (or maybe not) it is also the area that I have no idea how to learn other than trial and error.

And the greens dyslexia comment was comedy gold!
