I cant wait to start my lessons. I went to the range today to try out my new irons and I'm hitting everything awful. Ill hit 1-2 good shots then 10 bad ones. My driver is even worse. When I 1st got back into things a month or so ago i was killing it with my driver. lately I've been trying a bunch of different things and its getting very frustrating. I cant even find my old swing.

I am going to sort of share this thread...

I have been playing golf now for about 2 years. Was a baseball player all through high school and my first 2 years of college, but when I became a pitcher only decided to pick up golf. My first few times were very interesting, but I quickly picked up a love for the game and began to see my scores drop. I was consistently shooting high 80's, but I began to see my swing flaws become very apparent.

I think what I have struggled most with is consistency so I decided that getting some lessons might help, mostly because my iron game has fallen apart since my wrist surgery. I had my first lesson yesterday and must say it was the most frustrating hour session of my life.

I started by changing my grip. I have never had someone show me the proper grip and this was step one. It still feels uncomfortable, but I know I have more control of the club. The biggest thing my swing needs is the feeling of getting my body and wrists turned as I am leaving the clubface open and hitting a lot of pushes with my irons. I hit 90-100 balls with my sand wedge and felt like I was going backwards until the end of the lesson. My last 10 balls, about 7 of them were perfectly straight with high ball flight and good carry. My instructor gave me a lot to work on so I am going to practice these drills and when I go see him again hopefully the results are better.

If I had never ventured onto THP I more than likely would have never considered lessons, so I want to thank the community here for being so knowledgeable and hopefully with hard work and more lessons I can become a more consistent golfer.

Ok had my first lesson.
All I was swung was 7i and worked on tempo, form. Didnt even think about distance. Gave me a few drills to work on. Said when I hit it good it was picture perfect, but gotta get consistent.

Well my first range session after my first lesson was amazing! I hit almost every iron shot dead straight.. I feel like I still have less distance because my wrist isn't all the way back, but I am shocked that I hit the ball super straight since at my lesson I hit 2 of 80 straight if that.. My first lesson paid off and I can't wait to get back

Exciting to be making progress! I have regular lessons as well and we mainly practice with the 7i until I achieve better structure and mechanics. What has helped me is having the lessons video-taped so I can review later.

Enjoy your lessons!

Default Start My Lessons Tomorrow
I start my 1st golf lesson in the morning. Im 25 just getting back into golf. Consider myself very beginnerish. Thats what I told my instructor. I played a lot from around 8-18 and was very decent. Im struggling to find a good swing and rarely hit a good shot consistently. So I figured the best thing I could do is get some lessons to make it a lot more enjoyable.

Is there anything I should do to prepare? Anything I can do to help the instructor etc? I'm planning to do at least 6 lessons over the next 6 weeks then go from there. I'll keep track of my progress on here. Any advice would be awesome. Thanks

I'm in the same boat as you. Played a good bit until I was 13 or so, and haven't played since. I'm 24 and just getting back into it. I will have my first lesson on Thursday. It'll be interesting to see how our experiences with lessons are similar, and how they differ.

I'm hoping with lessons I can improve quickly. When receiving tips from friends, I've been able to make changes to my swing quickly. I think this is because none of the things I am doing is foreign, I've made all of these changes before many years before.

When I first started playing again a few months ago I could bomb it pretty well with my driver 300+ but only hit it straight half the time. Then I started going to the range, and launch monitor with a guy who is pretty goof. He started having me try this and that etc. It seemed like everything I would try would make things worse. So I figured its time to get a pro. Ive been getting very frustrated. Goodluck with your journey keep us up too date.

forget everything and start afresh. just take on board what the pro is saying. sometimes people will give you tips that will work against your pro. you need to decide if what hes teaching is the way you want to play as some pros teach by different methods other than that have fun

Good luck! I always come away with great tips and pointers after a lesson, which leads to better play directly afterward. Just wish I had the time/money to make lessons a consistent occurance.

I'd suggest taking a little pocket notebook and pen with you to jot down some notes during or right after your lesson. When I'm in a good position in my swing I try to focus on a key that will help me remember where I'm at and write it down. I'm still learning a lot about golf so I'll write down things like, when I'm doing XXXX the ball tends to go to the right, or when I YYYYYY I tend to hit behind the ball. It's useful to me because then I can try and self-diagnose what's going on when I'm working on my own.

You are certainly doing the right thing in taking lessons. I had my first in 1974 and my last three weeks ago. I would much rather have a real live qualified person telling me what I need to do, than a magazine article or a tip from a stranger on the net.

I hope it all goes great for you. You are on the right track to becoming a better player.

As others have said, go in with a fresh and open mind....try to start from scratch...if the instructor allows it, set up a video camera. A buddy did this recently, I never would have thought of it, but it was great to go back and watch him swing and then hear the instructor tell him what he was doing right and wrong....seemed to make a real difference to be able to see it yourself instead of just "feeling" it. Good Luck!

Empty your mind. I often think of a quote from Socrates (or Plato if you think Socrates was a fictional person created by Plato) which I will try to quote, or paraphrase, I don't have my book with me. "The wisest man is he who knows that he knows nothing."

The only advice I have for you is work on one thing per week. Don't go to your first lesson and have him/her fix too many thing because it just doesn't work between your brain and body. Work on one thing for a week forget about it and go to the next.

Don't plan on 6 lessons in 6 weeks. If your instructor is good, he will make a couple of changes at each lesson, and it will take you a week, and sometimes more, to feel comfortable with the changes he/she is making to your swing, grip, posture, etc. Don't rush it. Make sure you are 100% comfortable with what you are taught before scheduling the next lesson. If you do this, you will get a lot more out of your time.
